JUDA - In football, teams live off turnovers, volleyball isn't much different.
Every time the Juda volleyball team struggled from the service line, Albany made them pay. Juda (3-4, 2-1 Six Rivers East) had 11 service errors and Albany rolled to a sweep of the Panthers, 25-19, 25-16, 25-19.
"We just had the ball back and it gave us more energy to get our hits in," Albany junior Courtney Pfeuti said.
The Panthers got off to a quick start with sophomore CJ Dunwiddie scoring three straight points including two aces to give the Panthers a 7-5 lead. Fellow sophomore Ellen Kiser, who had a match-high eight blocks, blocked two consecutive hits to push the Panthers to a 10-6 lead.
After the Panthers' fourth service error in the first game, the Comets (5-1, 3-0) opened up an 18-15 lead by some hot serving from junior Hillary Best.
"Tonight our servers were off," Juda coach Pam Green said. "That hurt a lot. That (serving) has been a momentum builder for us. They didn't come through for us. It just didn't affect them on the serve. It affected them on the other end of the court passing and setting."
The Comets were sparked by some efficient passing to hitters Sydney Bump, Kaitlyn Schulz and Best. Pfeuti scored four straight points and had an ace to seal the first game.
"In the first game, we really worked on covering their tips," Albany coach Connie Wunschel said.
Wunschel knows the Comets' defensive rotation was better as the pace of the match developed.
"It changed their game plan because they knew we were there," Wunschel said of defending the tips.
Bump had a match-high 14 kills, along with 16 digs.
"We just tried to mix up our hits," Bump said.
Pfeuti had 16 assists and 16 digs. Schulz had a match-high 24 digs and five aces.
Albany senior Clare Koopmans and Juda junior Aly Pierce traded serving runs at the start of the second game. Pierce scored four straight points, which was highlighted by an ace to give the Panthers a 6-4 lead. After the Panthers' fourth service error of the second game, Schulz delivered a pair of aces to give the Comets a 16-11 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Best, who had three aces, helped the Comets jump out to a 14-7 lead in the final game. The Comets again capitalized on two service errors by the Panthers.
Juda senior Heather Boeke had eight kills and Pierce added nine assists.
"We have to dig down and come back from this," Green said. "We have to do more of the little things right. Our offense was kind of dead tonight. We have to be able to serve and pass. We have to be able to control the ball better."
