MONROE - A windy day and struggles on the green didn't stop Monroe's Kyle Bruce from shooting a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine at the Monroe Country Club Monday.

"The wind played a big factor. I had to aim it right," Bruce, a sophomore, said after his team fell to Stoughton, 162-180.

Bruce, who tied with Stoughton's Henry Klongland and Eric Howell atop the leaderboard, bogeyed holes 11, 12, 14 and 15. He birdied the par-5 13th.

"It was a pretty good round. My irons were normal. I had a bad drive on 17 that took the energy out," Bruce said, who recovered to shoot par on 17 and finished even on the par-5 18th.

Monroe's No. 2 player, Lucas Jordan, shot a 10-over-par 46 and hit par on just two holes (13, 15).

"It was kind of hard for me," Jordan said. "I haven't really played the back and it dried out a lot quicker than I anticipated. It was a lot harder than usual."

Jordan, a senior, was thankful for the help he got from his teammate, Bruce.

"You really had to play the wind. Kyle would tell me where to play it and everything was going good other than the putting," Jordan said.

Dylan Wilde shot a 47 and Caleb Pagel had a 48 to round out Monroe's top-four in scoring. The varsity reserve, Jessy Stagliano, carded a 51.

"With the tough conditions, Kyle shooting a 39 is very respectable," Monroe coach Brian Jensen said. "Normally we have our guys practice on the front nine, and today we took them to the back nine because we had to (Baumgartner's 5-Iron Classic played on the front nine). Our guys did just as well as I expected. It was a pretty good day for us. A couple of the guys are still improving, so we're happy to see that."

Bruce is the lone returning player from last year's varsity team, but Jensen is pleased with the progress his players are showing.

"There is still some work to be done, but they are having a good time. They are improving a little bit individually," Jensen said.

Monroe will get back into competition Thursday when the Cheesemakers travel to Fort Atkinson. On Friday, Monroe will host Oregon.
