Bruce 79th after Day 1

Monroe's Kyle Bruce shot a 9-over-par 81 in the first round and is in 79th place in the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship.
ERIN - Monroe High School graduate Kyle Bruce is tied for 79th place in the 114th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship after the first round Monday at Erin Hills Golf Course.

Bruce shot a 9-over-par 81 in the first round and will need to gain some ground to make the cut. The top 70 golfers including ties will advance after today's second round.

Bruce shot 7-over-par on the front nine and had a triple bogey on No. 4 and a double bogey on No. 9. He caught fire on the back nine, picking up eight pars.

Monroe Middle School math teacher Charlie Baumann shot 11-over 83 and is tied for 108th out of a field of more than 150 golfers.

Erin Hills, which will host the 2017 U.S. Open, challenged players with its windy conditions.

Only four players broke par in the first round. Johnny Decker of Verona and Sam Madsen of Madison both shot 2-under-par rounds of 70 for a share of the lead. Onalaska's Ben Skogen and Burlington's Ryan Hilton both shot 1-under 71 and are one shot back.
