BRODHEAD - Despite committing a combined 11 errors in two games, the Brodhead softball team came up with some timely hits to pull off two comebacks to sweep a doubleheader against Madison Edgewood Saturday.
Brodhead (10-4, 7-3 Rock Valley) rallied from a three-run deficit in the first game to beat Edgewood 8-6 and then came back again in the second game to clip the Crusaders 5-3.
The Cardinals trailed the Crusaders 6-3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning of the first game. Brodhead sophomore Katie Goecks had a game-tying RBI double to tie the game at 6. Sophomore teammate Hannah Myhre then delivered a game-winning two-run single to give the Cardinals an 8-6 win.
"The bats got going," Brodhead coach Tommy Meier said. "We got some clutch hits with two outs when we needed them. It showed our resiliency. We have come a long way with our confidence. I think we got something good going and they are starting to believe."
Brodhead committed six errors in the first game, which led to six unearned runs.
In the second game, the Crusaders jumped out to a 3-2 lead and the Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory. Steiner tripled leading off the seventh. Senior teammate McKenna Bump bunted for a single. Goecks then came through with a game-tying RBI single to tie the game at 3. Senior Shelby Moyer had a game-winning two-run single that sealed the Cardinals' comeback win.
