BRODHEAD - Brodhead had a tough day at the plate Tuesday, but the Cardinal hitters were bailed out by a solid start by pitcher Amanda Pickel, who led the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over Evansville.

Pickel threw six innings, giving up just two hits and two runs (one earned).

"She threw really well. Our bats have been really, really quiet the last few games, but it sure does help when you get a performance like that from your pitcher," said Brodhead coach B.J. Bockhop. "She was hitting her spots and mixing her change with her drop and rise. Their (number) nine hitter was the girl who had the two hits. Everyone else she pitched really well to."

Offensively, the Cardinals picked up just four hits. Taurie Burns was 1-for-2 at the plate with a double to record the only extra-base hit for Brodhead.

Brodhead (10-5, 8-2 Rock Valley South) hosts Whitewater on Thursday. The Cardinals are in second place in the conference behind Beloit Turner, but the Cardinals are scheduled to take on the Trojans on Friday.

"Turner got beat by Edgerton tonight and we lost to Edgerton on Monday. Turner is 10-1 and we're 8-2," Bockhop said. "If we can get by Whitewater on Thursday, it will set up for a pretty big game on Friday."

Juda-Albany 7, Black Hawk 0

Juda-Albany 10, Black Hawk 0

JUDA - Juda-Albany swept a doubleheader from Black Hawk, behind two strong pitching performances from Tabatha Davis.

The Panthers won the first game despite being outhit by the Warriors, 6-5. Juda-Albany coach Bill Davis said his team was able to capitalize on some mistakes while Black Hawk was unable to string together their hits.

"Walks, pass balls, we were taking advantage of those," Davis said. "Black Hawk hit the ball pretty well the first game, but they were sprayed out. They couldn't get anything together."

Juda-Albany's bats came alive in the second game, as the Panthers pounded out 12 hits in a 10-0 victory. Tabatha Davis led the Panthers at the plate in game two with a 4-for-4 performance that included two doubles and five RBI. Jessica Rackow was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Kirstie Kauk also added a double for the Panthers.

"We got the barrel on the ball and were a little more selective," Bill Davis said of his hitters in game two. "In game one, we would get into hitter's counts but were swinging at some balls. In the second game, we got into hitter's counts but were swinging at good pitches." Tabatha Davis pitched 11 of a possible 12 innings for the Panthers. She pitched all six in the first game, striking out 9. She pitched the first five innings of game two before being relieved by Carlie Peters.

"She pitched pretty well," Bill Davis said of Tabatha. "They played pretty solid defense behind her tonight. She gets lots of groundballs and they made the plays." Juda-Albany (8-6, 5-4 Six Rivers East) will get set to play Barneveld on Thursday. Black Hawk takes on Monticello on Friday.

Monticello 10, Pecatonica 2

Monticello 9, Pecatonica 3

BLANCHARDVILLE - Monticello swept a doubleheader from Pecatonica Tuesday night, winning 10-2 and 9-3. Monticello's Courtney Leuzinger hit a solo home run in the fourth inning of the first game, expanding the Ponies' lead to 3-0. Monticello added four in the fifth and three in the sixth to round out their scoring.

"They were really aggressive on the base paths and made us commit mistakes," said Pec coach Chuck Meyer. "We didn't do the right things. They were aggressive and it paid off well."

In game two, the Ponies offense banged out 14 hits, led by Marissa Berg who went 3-for-4 at the plate. "I think we couldn't string things together," he said. "First game, both teams had eight hits. They strung things together and we couldn't make the plays or we started throwing it around. We need to be more disciplined and aggressive at the plate. They're a good ball team. Their aggressiveness hurt us. They pushed us into making mistakes."

Pecatonica (2-15, 2-7 Six Rivers East) hosts Argyle on Thursday.

Barneveld 4, Argyle 2

ARGYLE - Barneveld picked up two late runs and squashed an Argyle rally to knock off the Orioles, 4-2. Arygle picked up a run in the first before Barneveld responded with two in the second to take a 2-1 lead.

Argyle tied the game up in the third inning. Neither team scored again until the sixth inning when Barneveld added two. Barneveld was able to work their way out of a jam.

"They made two good defensive plays (in the sixth)," said Argyle coach Dan Treuthardt. "We got the bases loaded with no outs. Alysha Monahan swung and kind of had like a swinging bunt. The runner hustled in, it was a real close play at the plate.

"We just didn't get the call. I had Kim Pink bunt. They made a real good play to get us out at home. Jess (Treuthardt) then hit a groundball to end the inning." Jessica Treuthardt was also in the circle for Argyle and gave up nine hits and four earned runs.

"Jessica pitched real well," Dan Treuthardt said. "Our defense needs to step up a little bit. The outfield made some mistakes."

Argyle (4-4 Six Rivers East) will play at Pecatonica on Thursday.
