BRODHEAD - The Brodhead softball team split a Rock Valley Conference doubleheader with rival Parkview Saturday, April 27.

Parkview edged Brodhead 2-1 in the first game and the Cardinals knocked off the Vikings 6-2 in the second of the twinbill.

Brodhead senior Amanda Pickel pitched seven innings in the first game and up two earned runs on eight hits. She struck out four and walked one.

Brodhead (8-4, 6-1 Rock Valley South) pounded out 15 hits in the second game of the doubleheader.

"Our whole focus this season with Parkview in our regional is we want to be the No. 1 seed in the regional and get two home games," Brodhead coach B.J. Bockhop said.

Brodhead senior Taurie Burns went 3-for-4. Four other players for the Cardinals went 2-for-4 including Pickel, freshman Kylie Moe, sophomore Taylor Gerlach and senior Erica Baxter.

"In the first game we couldn't string two hits together," Bockhop said. "Coming back and scoring more runs in the second game showed character by the girls. By that time, we were on the fourth time at-bat against her (Rachel Heffel). Our bats were hot."

Pickel pitched a complete game and gave up two runs on six hits. She struck out six and walked just one.

Brodhead will host Palmyra-Eagle Tuesday, April 3 and play at Palmyra-Eagle Thursday, May 2. The Cardinals will host Lake Geneva Badger at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 3 and they will honor the 2004 state championship team.

"They will talk to the girls about what it takes to make a tournament run," Bockhop said. "It's a good time of year as we gear up for tournament time."
