BRODHEAD - Fullback Derek Turner didn't need to be reminded about the rivalry between Brodhead-Juda and Evansville-Albany.

Turner, a senior for Brodhead-Juda, rushed for 119 yards on 17 carries and scored three touchdowns to power the Cardinals to a 35-7 non-conference win over Evansville-Albany Friday, Aug. 30.

"We were the first team to beat them like that," Turner said of the Blue Devils, who won the Rock Valley North Conference last year. "It's all the offensive line. The coaches have been pushing us all week. We just want to keep going and running like we have been. There is no way we can be stopped. We have a big team."

Brodhead-Juda (2-0) opened the game with a six-play, 70-yard drive culminating in Turner rumbling for a 40-yard TD run. Brodhead-Juda senior Jordan Douglas scored on a 27-yard run to give the Cardinals a 14-0 lead.

With the Cardinals driving late in the second quarter, with 1 minute and 2 seconds to go until halftime, the game was delayed 1 hour and 25 minutes due to lightning. But the delay didn't slow down the Cardinals: Turner bowled his way in on a 2-yard TD run after the delay to give the Cardinals a 20-0 lead at the end of the second quarter. The Cardinals racked up 361 total rushing yards. Douglas rushed for 74 yards on seven carries and scored one touchdown and Mitchell Johnson rushed for 68 yards on 12 carries.

"The game is won and lost up front," Brodhead-Juda coach B.J. Bockhop said. "With the physical guys and the size we have up front, we stayed with what was working (running the ball). We were pretty physical up front. You are never comfortable playing Evansville-Albany. They had an hour or so to come up with different defensive schemes to stop us. We just stayed with what was working."

The Cardinals' defense was just as dominant as the offense limiting the Blue Devils to just 153 total yards and just 36 yards rushing. The Cardinals had two sacks and Jordan Kraak had a key interception in the third quarter to thwart a Blue Devils' drive. The Cardinals cashed in on the turnover, with Kraak racing for a 2-yard TD run on the option on fourth-and-goal.

"The first two weeks our defensive coordinators have schemed awesome," Bockhop said. "We are doing what is the kids' strengths. They are playing physical. They are focused on the season and not looking ahead."

Turner scored his third touchdown on a 3-yard TD run to give the Cardinals a 33-0 lead. Turner and junior Reave Lincoln combined on a safety in the fourth quarter to give the Cardinals a running clock.

Evansville-Albany played without starting quarterback Matt Sperry, who missed the game due to a concussion he suffered in the season-opening 30-21 win over Union Grove.

"That's not an excuse," Evansville-Albany coach Ron Grovesteen said. "They (Brodhead-Juda) are a very good team. They tackled and blocked well and we didn't. It's pretty simple."

Evansville-Albany sophomore Ben Haegele started at quarterback and was 9 of 18 passing for 117 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Haegele tossed a 41-yard TD pass to Grant Schoenenberger late in the fourth quarter to ruin the Cardinals' shutout bid. Evansville-Albany senior Isaiah Shell had four receptions for 45 yards.

"He (Haegele) did a nice job," Grovesteen said. "Our line didn't block well. If you are not blocking well, you are not going to do well."

Evansville-Albany will host Walworth Big Foot next week.

"We have a lot of development to do," Grovesteen said. "Big Foot is a state championship caliber team."
