Brodhead holds off hard-charging Panthers

OREGON - The Brodhead girls basketball team started Tuesday having moved up from No. 9 to No. 5 in The Associated Press Division 3 girls basketball poll, then ended it by recording a sixth straight victory.

Junior Taylor Douglas scored a game-high 19 points and sophomore Carly Mohns added 11 to lead the Cardinals to a 53-48 non-conference win against the Oregon Panthers.

The Cardinals opened a 34-27 halftime lead behind Douglas' 12 first-half points and increased the lead to double digits by holding the Panthers to five points in the third quarter.

Oregon outscored the Cardinals 16-10 in the fourth quarter but came up short as Brodhead (6-0) put the finishing touches on a 19-for-31 effort at the free throw line.

Belmont 53, Albany 31

BELMONT - Senior Kailee Kamps, a two-time first-team all-conference selection from the Six Rivers West, made it a long night for Albany as she scored 16 points and led Belmont to victory.

The Comets were held to just two points in the first quarter and trailed 30-13 entering halftime. Junior Kirstie Kauk scored 12 points and junior Cassidy Bump added nine for Albany.
