OREGON - Perhaps their toughest challenge yet this season, the Brodhead girls basketball team traveled to take on a formidable opponent in the Oregon Panthers. But as they have done all year long, Brodhead ran away with a convincing 68-41 victory.
For those in attendance, the game was a spectacle of two talented teams loaded with talented players, featuring two Division I basketball recruits in Brodhead's Carly Mohns and Oregon's Maddy Gits.
Mohns, an Iowa recruit, got into early foul trouble in the first half. Without Mohns on the floor, other players on the Cardinals roster were able to provide the firepower in giving Brodhead a 35-25 halftime advantage.
Once play resumed in the second half, Mohns made up for her time off the floor, scoring seven points in the opening moments of the half en route to scoring 14 of her team's 22 points in the third quarter alone.
After building upon their lead, Brodhead was able to apply their defensive pressure in holding Gits, a Saint Louis University recruit, to only 11 points along with drawing five fouls. In the end, solid play on both ends of the court propelled the Cardinals to the win.
Mohns finished with a game-high 18 points. Rachel Heller added 16 points and Meg Duffield contributed 13 points for Brodhead.
Brodhead will look to complete a perfect season Thursday, Feb. 27 when they host Big Foot.
Black hawk 38, Potosi 32
SOUTH WAYNE - It was a low-scoring affair for both the Black Hawk and Potosi girls basketball teams on Monday. But despite not playing a game in 10 days, the host Warriors were able to pull away with a 38-32 non-conference win over a tough Potosi team.
"It was good to get back on the court and get into the rhythm of a game," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "We struggled to finish around the rim offensively, as I thought we left a couple of points off the board. Defensively I thought we played really well as we contested a lot of their shots."
"With the time off, we obviously had a little rust to shake off. I don't know how much it affected the team, but we'll take the win against a quality team like Potosi any day."
Combining for 27 of their team's 38 points were Jen Wellnitz and Aleigha Sigafus, who scored 17 and 10 points respectively.
Dodgeville 66, New Glarus 58
DODGEVILLE - After starting the game with a 23-12 opening quarter, the lady Knights were unable to keep the pace, as they only mustered 18 points combined in the second and third quarters in Monday night's 66-58 loss to Dodgeville.
Undefeated in conference play, the host Dodgers doubled New Glarus' free throw attempts throughout the game, as they connected on 21 of their 36 total attempts.
New Glarus had solid outings by seniors Courtney Feller and Karina Moen, scoring 23 and 17 points respectively.
The Knights (8-13, 4-6) will travel to Lake Mills in a conference cross-over game on Thursday, Feb. 27.
Argyle 55, Parkview 38
ORFORDVILLE - After suffering a tough defeat on Saturday to Benton/Shullsburg, the Argyle girls basketball team rebounded Monday with a solid 55-38 performance against Orfordville Parkview.
"This was a great comeback game from Saturday's loss," Orioles coach Kurt Ritschard said. "Offensively we were sound from the start, and I thought throughout the game we were able to make some stands and apply the pressure."
After the first half, the Orioles held only a five-point lead and were searching for ways to slow down their opponent.
"I thought in the second half we were able to make some nice adjustments defensively. Our defensive pressure was good, and we were able to force some turnovers," Ritschard said.
In applying a stifling defense, the Orioles distanced themselves from Orfordville Parkview and ended the night with the victory.
Junior Josie Thoman had 11 points for Argyle.
Cassville 40, Juda 33
JUDA - Freshman Chelsea Burkhalter had 10 points for the host Panthers, but the visiting Comets got the bulk of their points from teammates Jenna Friesen and Andrea Okey who combined for 28 of their team's total, winning 40-33.
Juda (6-15, 3-8) travel to Milwaukee to take on the Destiny girls basketball team on Thursday, Feb. 27 in their final game of the regular season.
Belmont 56, Pecatonica 35
BELMONT - The visiting Vikings found themselves trailing by 27 points as they entered the final quarter in their game against Belmont on Monday night. The end result was a 56-35 non-conference loss to the Braves.
"I thought we played a little (timid) tonight," Pecatonica coach Scott Carlson commented. "They (Belmont) are long, tall, and athletic, and I think that got to our girls early. I thought as the game developed a little, we were able to finally drive and kick the ball out to the perimeter, but at that time it was too late."
Sami Miller had eight points for the Vikings.
