WHITEWATER - The Brodhead girls basketball team overcame a slow start to keep their perfect season in tact by defeating Whitewater, 48-32.
Brodhead trailed Whitewater 10-9 after the first quarter. The Cardinals picked up the tempo after that, though, and outscored the Whippets 39-22 the rest of the way.
"In the first quarter, Whitewater did what they wanted to do. They packed their zone in and they were the more aggressive team on the offensive end," Brodhead coach Brad Pickett said. "We talked between the first and second quarters about wanting to attack more. We did a better job of looking to attack and pushing the tempo. We played their game in the first, but the rest of the game was more our tempo."
The Cardinals continued to feature a balanced attack on the offensive end. Carly Mohns led Brodhead with 16 points, while Kylie Moe had 11 and Taylor Douglas and Rachel Heller each added 10.
"We had four kids in double digits. Like we've talked about before, if we keep getting balance like that, it's tough to defend," Pickett said.
Brodhead, the fourth-ranked team in Division 3, improved to 13-0 with the win. The Cardinals host Lakeside Lutheran next Tuesday.
Cuba City 43, Darlington 31
DARLINGTON - With a share of first place in the SWAL on the line, the Darlington girls basketball team came up short in their effort to avenge their previous loss to Cuba City.
Cuba City held a 6-4 lead after a quarter of play, before opening up their lead a bit in the second by outscoring Darlington 12-5.
The Redbirds picked up their production on offense in the second half, scoring 11 in both the third and fourth quarters, but it wasn't enough to make a comeback. Darlington coach Riley Fitzsimons said the key for Cuba City was ball pressure.
"They had incredible ball pressure and we couldn't figure out to handle it," he said. "In the second half, we were attacking the basket more. We adjusted well, but we just couldn't pull it out."
The Cubans beat the Redbirds 40-29 on Nov. 30, and Fitzsimons said the Cubans didn't change much from the earlier matchup.
"They did everything we thought they would do," he said. "They ran a 1-2-1 halfcourt trap and played tough man-to-man defense. They came out and shot the ball pretty well."
Claire Scott led Darlington with 12 points, and Cassidy Chambers and Mallory Busch each chipped in 7.
Darlington fell to 10-3 overall and 6-2 in the SWAL. Despite the loss, Fitzsimons said his team is still playing good basketball and is in good shape for the stretch run.
"We just need to continue to do what we do and get better at doing it," he said. "On offense, we just need to learn how to handle pressure. If we can keep handling pressure and playing good defense, and get better at it, we'll be fine."
