BRODHEAD - Senior Parker Johnson shot a 4-over-par 40 for the Brodhead golf team to take seventh place in the Rock Valley Conference mini meet at Decatur Lake Golf Course Thursday.

Edgerton's Kyle Wille was the medalist shooting a 1-under-par 35. The Crimson Tide captured the title with their top four golfers all breaking 40 to finish with a 148, which was well ahead of runner-up Jefferson (169). Brodhead took fifth as a team (191).

"There were a couple of putts I could have made," Johnson said. "I'm pretty happy with a 40. We knew coming in the course wasn't in the best shape and we were hoping to take advantage of that and hoping it would work in our favor with the scores."

Johnson birdied No. 12 and settled for bogeys on No. 13, 14 and 18. He had a putt for par that just came up short on No. 18 and tapped in for a bogey.

"It was definitely a makeable putt," he said of the putt attempt for par on No. 18. "I also had an extra putt on No. 14 for bogey."

Brodhead is fifth in the Rock Valley heading into the conference tournament Wednesday at the Riverside Golf Course in Janesville. Edgerton, which won all of the Rock Valley Conference mini meets, will enter the conference tournament as a heavy favorite.

They have five solid golfers," Brodhead coach Eric Oliver said. "They have five guys who have golfed since they were little. They have good roots as golfers. I wanted to see us shoot in the 180s."

Brodhead's Dayton Oliver shot a 44 and junior Derrick Oborne carded a 53. Teammate Wyatt Visger rounded out the top four for the Cardinals shooting a 54.

Johnson is looking forward to the conference tournament and the WIAA Division 2 Big Foot regional.

"If we play our best golf at the end of the year hopefully we can move up a couple of spots or maybe more," Johnson said. "I think we have a couple of guys who could make it to sectionals. We have all been really improving. We just have to tidy up a few things."

Johnson said the areas he needs to focus on in practice are putting inside 10 feet, chipping around the green and perfecting approach shots.

Eric Oliver understands the road to an individual sectional berth for any Cardinal golfers will be an uphill climb.

"If the stars align and everything works out then maybe," Oliver said.

First the Cardinals are focused on the conference tournament. They are looking to make a jump up the conference standings from fifth.

"It would be nice if we could finish second or third and move up a couple of spots," Oliver said. "Golf is a funny game. We will see what happens."
