FORT ATKINSON - The Black Hawk Lady Warriors' road to state was blocked.
Sheboygan County Christian senior center Jocelyn Ver Velde swatted away eight Warriors shots as the Eagles defeated Black Hawk 33-30 in WIAA Division 4 Fort Atkinson Sectional Final Saturday night.
The Warriors cut a 10-point deficit of 28-18 with five minutes to go down to 31-30 with 29.9 seconds to go when sophomore Kim Wellnitz stole the ball, went high off the glass and was fouled by Sara Lemmenes. Wellnitz missed her free throw and a pair of free throws by Eagles senior Kelly Smies iced the game. A deep 3-point attempt by Gabi Lehner was off to the left as the horn sounded.
Black Hawk gave Christian fits with defensive pressure in the fourth quarter, but couldn't make its free throws and went 3-for-8 in the final quarter. Wellnitz and her older sister Aryn, a departing senior, led the team with nine points apiece.
