MADISON - The Monroe boys track team took part in the annual Madison West Relays at UW-Madison, Saturday.
Monroe had two champions in the 19-team meet, and seven athletes top personal-best marks.
Junior Michael Barrett shattered his previous best in the high jump by four inches, finishing with a 6-foot, 4-inch hop to claim the title.
"Michael Barrett, you could say he actually had four personal bests," Monroe head coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "After clearing 6-foot on his third attempt, Michael went on to clear 6-1, then 6-2, then 6-3 and finally 6-4 on his first attempt. The other two competitors were out at 6-2. Six-four is a great jump, especially for this time of the year."
Jeffery Hill won the pole vault with a mark of 13-9 and could have potentially vaulted higher. However, according to Hirsbrunner, Hill next went for the school record of 14-4, but missed.
Junior Nick Walker beat a personal mark in the shot put with a throw of 50-0 1/2, placing second.
"50 feet is a huge throw for a high schooler," Hirsbrunner said. "Nick has been working very hard with coach (Brian) Jefferson and it is satisfying to see him hit that mark. He's still got room to go, also. Fifty-two or 53 feet isn't totally out of the question."
Junior Caleb Ahrens improved his 55-meter high hurdles time in each of his three races - two preliminary and the finals. Ahrens topped out at 7.39 seconds and took second place.
"What a nice progression for Caleb. He continued to get faster each race," Hirsbrunner said.
Luke Peterson beat his personal record in the 800-meter run by four seconds, finishing in ninth place with a time of 2:10.4.
Joel Henry knocked off his personal best in the 1,600 with a time of 4:50.7.
"He has lowered his time just about every time he has run it," Hirsbrunner said of Henry's seventh-place finisher.
Gottlieb Brandli and Alex Bartlett each recorded personal bests in the 55-meter dash, making it out of the preliminary round and into the semifinals.
Skyler Stingley took second in the 400 with a time of 54.41.
As a team, Monroe finished fifth with 46 team points. La Crosse Logan (88.25) won the meet. Tomah (76), West Bend West (56) and Platteville (53) also finished ahead of the Cheesemakers.
