MONROE - The competition in the middle to long distance events at Monroe boys track practices has to be heated if Tuesday's double dual meet sweep was any indication.
Monroe senior Dylan Starck won the 1,600-meter run (4 minutes, 36.2 seconds) and the 800 (2:00.7) to propel the Cheesemakers to a 95-51 win over Fort Atkinson and a 100-41 win over Stoughton. Starck ran both the 1,600 and 800 with teammate Ethan Moehn at the front of the pack for most of each race. Moehn took second in the 800 and third in the 1,600.
"At the beginning of the year it was me pushing Ethan to good times," Starck said. "I told him today that we would switch it up. He can share in the workload. He (Moehn) has a very bright future ahead of him."
The Cheesemakers are 6-0 in Badger South dual meets and are the favorite to win a third straight conference title. Starck is looking forward to the conference meet May 17 at Monona Grove.
"We always want to finish strong going into the end of the year," Starck said. "This was a simulation of what we might do at the conference meet."
Monroe junior Joel Henry won the 3,200 with a time of 10:13.6. The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team - made up of Skyler Stingley, Alex Barenklau, Luke Peterson and Steve Christiansen - took first with a time of 8:34.3.
"I was waiting for a day like this," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "We have a lot of contributors that a lot of teams would like to have them as their top runner. We have talked to the kids about times are supposed to come down this time of year. Hopefully, this is a great sign of things to come at the conference meet."
Senior Michael Barrett cleared 6-6 to win the high jump. He made three attempts at 6-8 for the school record, but missed each one. Senior Jeffrey Hill won the pole vault (14-feet). Hill, who already has the school record in the pole vault, tried to vault past 14-9, but came up short. The Cheesemakers have two of the state's top 12 high jumpers (Barrett and freshman Jake Hirsbrunner) in WisSports.net's track and field honor roll, regardless of division.
"We have two very good athletes," Miller said of the high jump. "I'm not surprised to see what they have done. We have one of the best high jumping coaches in the state in Dave Hirsbrunner. Year in and year out Monroe has very good high jumpers. It's not by accident."
Monroe senior Nick Walker won the shot put (52 feet, 6 3/4 inches) and the discus (141-2). The Cheesemakers dominated both events, sweeping the top three in each. Fellow seniors Michael Kohn and Jacob Reynolds finished second and third respectively.
"Our throwers have really scored a lot of points for us this year," Miller said.
Walker said after some of his distances have dropped the last couple of meets, he felt great getting back to his throws that were consistent early on.
"I'm happy with it, but not too happy," Walker said. "I'm not satisfied. I hope to do well the rest of the season."
