BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Panthers flex pride as they clip Eagles

JUDA - Southwestern Wisconsin basketball enthusiasts might view Juda's 67-63 victory over Barneveld an upset. The Juda Panthers call Thursday's Six Rivers East boys basketball victory another night at the office.

"It's not like we're trying to figure things out out there," Juda coach Andy Werner said. "We've got our guys in their roles, we've been playing pretty good basketball and expect to play well no matter who we're facing."

After a 31-point outburst Friday night, Beau Benner hung another 27 on the board after a slow start. Senior Kurtis Mansfield, the second member of Juda's 1-2 punch, scored 16 points, but a less-than-usual suspect came through at the game's turning point.

Juda (7-3, 3-2 Six Rivers East) nursed a two-point lead with two minutes remaining until Kevin Mansfield buried a 3-pointer to all but put things on ice.

"He's a kid that will miss 10 in a row but know he's gonna hit the next one," Werner said. "As a coach you're yelling, 'No! No! No! ... Yes! Yes! Yes!'"

The Panthers also closed the third quarter on a 5-0 run over the last 24 seconds. After a Benner layin and a quick Eagles miss, Kurtis Mansfield hit a bomb a few feet beyond the arc to build a five-point lead entering the final quarter.

Trent Sullivan led Barneveld (7-2, 4-2 Six Rivers East) with 26 points.

The Panthers knocked the Eagles from a tie atop the league and hope to do the same thing to Black Hawk when they travel to South Wayne on Saturday night.

Pecatonica 53, Albany 45

The Comets and the Vikings couldn't have been more different coming into Thursday's matchup.

Albany was riding high on the emotional wave of a heart-stopping ovetime victory Tuesday over Potosi, while Pecaontica hadn't played since Dec. 20 at Black Hawk. By the final horn, the roles reversed as the Vikings broke out in the second half and won at home.

Brandon Meudt scored 21 for the Vikings (5-4 overall, 3-3 Six Rivers East), who trailed the Comets (1-10 overall, 0-6 Six Rivers East) 23-22 at half.

Pecatonica head coach Jim Syse wasn't too worried as he watched his Vikings work off the rust from the long layoff and had little to say in his halftime speech.

"Just let the offense work and we did that in the second half," Syse said.

Kaleb Feller added 18 for the Vikings and T.J. Zweifel led Albany with 14 points.

Monticello 48, Argyle 40

The Ponies found a perfect balance in their victory over Argyle.

Four Monticello (6-4 overall, 5-1 Six Rivers East) gunners found their stroke from beyond the arc as the Orioles couldn't close the gap to narrower than eight points down the stretch. Dusty Ritschard drilled two triples, while D.J. McGowan, Jacob Edge and Ryan Fink pitched in from downtown.

Kevin Berg had 12 and partner-in-crime Andy Bohlman added 11 in the loss for Argyle (3-8 overall, 1-5 Six Rivers East).

Mineral Point 78, Darlington 70 (OT)

The Redbirds are left out at sea.

Mineral Point's Blacke Berning drilled a game-tying 3-pointer as the clock expried in regulation, allowing the Pointers to go to work at the charity stripe in the extra session in a victory at Darlington.

Mineral Point (4-6 overall, 3-2 SWAL) scored all 13 of its points in overtime from the line, converting on 20 attempts. Berning led the Pointers' attack with 23 points, while Kaleb Engelke added 16.

Mitchell Erickson had 19 for the Redbirds before fouling out.
