BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Glarner gang finds extra gear

NEW GLARUS - Great things can and will happen when a team finds that little extra burst.

After being stifled by the Vanguards' defense in the first half, New Glarus found its groove to erase a 26-18 halftime deficit and defeat Wisconsin Heights, 58-50, Monday in New Glarus.

"We had trouble pushing the ball (in the first half)," Glarner Knights head coach Travis Sysko said. "(In the second half), Heights forced some shots and we took advantage in transition."

Cassidy Flannery scored 14 of his 18 points in second half, while junior Jake Bast put in all 13 of his points after intermission. The Glarner Knights did not hit a 3-pointer in the game, but shot 14-for-16 from the charity stripe.

"We got out and ran and attacked the rim," Sysko said.

ALBANY 48, MARANTHA BAPTIST 45

Three points was better than two for Albany in the first quarter Monday.

The Comets scored all 15 of their first-quarter points from beyond the arc and held on to earn their second victory of the season over Maranatha Baptist on the road.

Mike Elmer hit four first-quarter triples to get 12 of his 17 out of the way quickly. Sophomore Bryce Hulburt added 12 points after scoring 10 on Saturday versus Argyle.

Albany hopes the mojo carries over as it has but two more chances at a Six Rivers East victory - at home Thursday against Juda andTuesday against Pecatonica.

MONTICELLO 74, ABUNDANT LIFE 43

Monticello got its legs loose for Thursday's big tilt.

Three days away from their Six Rivers East conference championship match with Black Hawk, the Ponies broke out for two first-half runs of 29-5 and 14-1 to race away from Abundant Life and win at home.

D.J. McGowan buried four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points in the rout. J.T. Meier added 13.

SHULLSBURG 47, ARGYLE 28

Argyle head coach Travis Erickson probably just put stretching his Orioles' defense to the top of his practice schedule.

Shullsburg drilled seven 3-pointers to put the Orioles in a stranglehold and came out victorious 47-28 in Argyle.

Brooks Lutes and Dylan Gille had three 3-pointers apiece to lead the Miners. Kevin Berg had 12 to lead Argyle.
