Boys Basketball Roundup: Accidental adjustment spurs first Albany victory

ALBANY - Derik Doescher says execution is overrated. The Albany Comets boys basketball coach would rather have a guy in his lineup with the ability to think on his feet.

That's what he got from junior Tyler Bauman, who whiffed on setting a pick with 11 seconds left, but slipped out to the top of the key to hit the 3-pointer that sent Albany to overtime with Potosi. The Comets went on to earn their first win of the season in the extra session.

Bauman was supposed to screen for Adam Zurfluh, who was red hot in scoring eight points during a 21-9 first quarter.

"We didn't execute, but that's a kid who's willing to take that shot and that says a lot about who Tyler Bauman is," Doescher said.

Bauman also had three of the Comets' five overtime points and scored a team-high 18 points. Zurfluh pitched in with 16 points as the Chieftains hawked T.J. Zweifel after his 23-point outburst at Juda on Friday night.

The Comets led 18-3 out of the gates but found themselves trailing by eight points with five minutes left before flipping the switch.

"We're down 8, we're 0-9, it would've been real easy to fold the cards and chalk it up to being 0-10," Doescher said. "I said to the guys afterward that it was only right to win this way to get our first one."

EDGERTON 63, BRODHEAD 37

The Cardinals were routed in the first three quarters to the tune of 57-24 by the Crimson Tide, but won the fourth quarter in a road loss in the Rock Valley Conference.

Ryan Miller had 10 points to lead Brodhead (4-7 overall, 1-5 Rock Valley), but Edgerton's (11-0, 6-0) trio of Derek Carrier (19), Bryan Gregory (17) and Travis Towns (10) was too much to handle.
