PLATTEVILLE - Darlington upended the state's top Division 3 boys basketball team in a tight SWAL battle Saturday, 67-60.

Cuba City (10-1, 5-1), led by Wisconsin's winningest coach Jerry Petitgoue, is ranked No. 1 in the state by the Associated Press and is No. 2 in the WisSports.net Coaches Poll.

Sophomore sensation Alex Erickson scored 27 points for the Redbirds (6-5, 3-3).

Erickson, the team's leading scorer, outplayed the Cubans' Evan Richard (19 points). Earlier this year in a WBBY Shootout game in Milwaukee, Richard scored 50 points.

Ethan Pickett scored 16 points, Brett Hardyman had 10 and Tucker Wiegel added eight for Darlington. The Redbirds hit 10 3-pointers.

Darlington started hot and took a 16-10 lead after the first quarter. By halftime, the Redbirds led 35-25.

As the Cubans tried to inch their way back into the game in the second half, Darlington kept pace and finished off the upset.

The Cardinals' next challenge will be a road game against Fennimore (6-5, 3-3).
