STOUGHTON - There's no victory like a character victory, and that's just what Curt Miller got out of his Lady Cheesemakers Tuesday night at a Badger South dual track and field meet in Stoughton.
Both Monroe's boys and girls squads took down the Vikings, 78.5-67.5 and 84-62, respectively.
"We knew that Stoughton was going to be a tough team and we would need to have a great day as a team to win," Miller said. "Our girls displayed a lot of character and toughness today."
Sophomore Stephanie Wyss set the tone on the track by winning both the 200- and 400-meter races at 27.6 and 63.3 seconds, repectively. She also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x400 relay squad. Claire Wyttenbach was second in that relay sequence that won with a time of 4 minutes, 32 seconds. She also won the 300 hurdles at 52.8 seconds, mere minutes before the relay starter gun sounded.
In the field portion, Meghan Tomasiewicz was a force, claiming both the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches, a new personal record, by four inches) and the pole vault (8 feet) to round out Monroe's multiple winners. Shelby Metcalf's discus throw of 95 feet also was far and away a PR. The Cheesemakers dominated the field events to the tune of 37-17.
Monroe's boys were anchored by their talented distance crew that hasn't skipped a beat since a breakout cross country season.
Junior Brett DeNure won both the 800- (2:11) and 1600-meter (5:07) runs, and Jon Swartz added gold in the 3200 at 10:38. Fellow hound Cullen Sampson took the 400 at 55.3 seconds.
DeNure also was on the 4x400 relay team that took first with a time of 3:41.8, while Swartz and Sampson contributed to the victorious 4x800 quartet.
Both Monroe squads now take aim at the Simpson Relays, scheduled for Friday at the friendly confines of Monroe High School.
