MONONA - Monroe's soccer squad couldn't overcome the "shotty" predicament it found itself in on the road Monday evening.
The Lady Cheesemakers put 14 shots on target to Monona Grove's 15 in the Badger South clash, but two of the Silver Eagles' shots found the back of the net in the first 12 minutes to put Monroe behind the 8-ball in the 3-0 loss.
"Monroe was a little bit caught off guard with the speed of the Monona Grove offensive attack," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said.
Erin Bork scored Monona Grove's first goal before assisting on the second, scored by Kelly Peterson. Bork also had the helper on the second-half tally.
O'Neill praised Erin Solawetz and the midfield for playing through balls and trying to establish some runs. She also was impressed with freshman Kylee Ritschard's willingness to put four shots on the target, particularly when she was using her most valuable body part.
"She's using her head, which is very nice," O'Neill said. "It's hard to get forwards to head the ball when the weather is so cold."
Some stinging rain greeted the athletes as they took the pitch, but subsided to reveal cool but very playable conditions.
