Blumer leads Milton girls past Monroe

MILTON - Consistency.

That's the word Monroe girls basketball coach Sam Mathiason was preaching to his team after a tough 51-39 loss to Milton Tuesday night.

Monroe got off to a good start against the Red Hawks, grabbing a 13-10 lead after a quarter of play. The Cheesemakers were unable to sustain that pace, though, as the Red Hawks pulled away in the second half secure the victory.

"Our first half was really good," Mathiason said. "We had a chance to tie it going in at halftime. Our defensive effort was outstanding. We came out in the second half and executed and had a 36-35 lead. We ended up going 15 possessions between the third and fourth without scoring, where they went on 15-0 run."

Morgan Blumer, a Division 1 recruit, led the way for Milton, scoring 27 points.

"They put her in the top of a 1-3-1 zone. She got some steals. She just has this ability to score from a bunch of places," Mathiason said. "I thought we had done a pretty good job on her, but, when you look at the scorebook, she just found ways to score."

Whitney Disch led Monroe with nine points. The Cheesemakers also got eight points from both Heather Barta and Chandra McGuire.

"I thought Heather gave us a good push to start," Mathiason said. "Disch had 5 in the fourth. We had seven people score, so that was good to see. We just kinda talked about finishing plays. We executed well, but didn't get all the baskets we thought we could make."

The game wrapped up the first half of Badger South play for the Cheesemakers (1-13, 0-6).

"We just have to continue to find ways to improve and find that consistency," he said. "We need to keep believing in ourselves. We just have to find a way to be resilient and keep pushing and find that consistency on both ends of the floor."

BRODHEAD - The Brodhead got off to a good start, taking a 16-9 lead after the first quarter.

"They pushed the ball, and we like to do that as well. We did a good job of getting back defensively," Brodhead coach Brad Pickett said of the first quarter.

Four Cardinals scored in double digits. Kylie Moe led the Cards with 18 points. Carly Mohns (16 points), Taylor Douglas (11) and Rachel Heller (10) also contributed for Brodhead.
