STOUGHTON - Monroe senior Trevor Blum doesn't mind going the extra mile for the Cheesemakers boys track team, even in the rain.
Blum won the 1,600-meter run in a Badger South Conference quad meet at Stoughton Tuesday. Blum won the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 41.4 seconds. He then came back and helped the Cheesemakers win the 1,600 relay.
"It's guys like Trevor Blum who win a conference championship," Monroe boys coach Curt Miller said. "He ran a PR in the 1,600 and came back in the 1,600 relay. It's guys like that with that mentality is the reason Monroe has won so many conference championships the last decade."
Madison Edgewood won the meet, racking up 70 points, which was just ahead of second-place finishers Monroe and Milton (63). Stoughton took fourth (54).
"It wasn't our focus to win this meet," Miller said. "We are using meets like this to find out about the middle part of our team. I was just happy we got a chance to get out and compete because it wasn't a nice day. It's been the Monroe mentality that come the conference meet, we want to score in every event. We found a lot of things out today."
Monroe junior Cody Faust had a hand in winning two events. Faust won the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) and teamed with Blum, Noah Tostrud and Cody Wolf to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:41.7.
"They ran a great time," Miller said. "I think it's the first 400 Cody Wolf has run. The 400 is one of those events if you are willing to work you will succeed."
Monroe junior Seth Calaway won the 100 (11.4). He teamed with Blake Bast, Blake Duffy and Forrest Klug-Hanson to win the 400 relay with a time of 46.2 seconds.
"He (Calaway) has been a staple of our sprint crew," Miller said. "He is one of the best sprinters in our conference."
Miller likes the way the Cheesemakers are developing their sprint relays.
"Our sprint crew has a lot of depth," he said.
The Monroe girls track team took fourth (31.5 points). Stoughton won the meet 102.5-85 over Madison Edgewood. Milton clipped the Cheesemakers by 0.5 points for third place. The Cheesemakers were without senior Lauren Werth (illness) and sophomore Abby Oudinot (sore ankle).
"We held back quite a bit," Monroe girls track coach Doug Miller said. "We held girls to two events or less with the weather. With the weather, we just wanted to keep them healthy."
Monroe freshman Jordan Hirsbrunner finished second in the 300 hurdles (49.94) and freshman Josie Eberle took second in the 100 (13.44).
"We had a good look at our kids in the 100 and 200 with the same wind conditions," Doug Miller said. "We will do some of that next Tuesday. It won't be the last time."
Monroe senior Mafer Larraga finished third in the 200 (28.35) and Ciara Kaderly took third in the 800 (2:39.2). Casey Rielly ran a season-best in the 100 hurdles (17.53) to finish third.
"We learned a lot more than it looks like on paper," Doug Miller said. "We didn't set it up to score a lot of points."
