NEW GLARUS - For the second time in three days, the New Glarus girls basketball team couldn't slow down Cambridge's Monica Muth and the Blue Jays pulled out a 55-47 win over the Glarner Knights Saturday, Feb. 22.
After a slow first quarter for both teams, the Knights picked up the pace, outscoring the Blue Jays 20-13 in the second quarter to take a five-point lead at the half.
Muth scored a game-high 20 points and the Blue Jays outscored the Knights 23-17 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
"She likes to penetrate and she can shoot from the outside," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "She gets fouled and she gets to the free throw line. She's a very versatile player."
Muth scored 10 of her points from the foul line.
New Glarus senior Sierra Watrud scored a team-high 15 points on five 3-pointers. Senior Courtney Feller added 11 points and Karina Moen chipped in eight points.
Watrud gave the Knights a spark with her outside shooting.
"She (Watrud) should do it more often," Scheele said. "It kept us going in the game."
Cambridge (13-7, 7-3 Capitol South) was 18 of 22 from the free throw line and the Knights shot just 11 of 22. With the loss, New Glarus drops to 8-12, 4-6.
Benton-Shullsburg 63, Argyle 42
SHULLSBURG - Benton-Shullsburg used a big second half to knock off Argyle in a non-conference game 63-42 Saturday.
Benton-Shullsburg outscored the Orioles (9-9) 22-8 in the third quarter to build a 13-point lead. The Orioles were outscored 41-19 in the second half and had Jenna Langmeier and Hannah Saalsaa foul out. Benton-Shullsburg had four players in double figures led by Sarah Redfearn with a game-high 14 points.
Argyle's Jozey Thoman also scored 14 points and Jessica Treuthardt added 10 points.
In other action, Darlington defeated Iowa-Grant 61-60. With the win, darlington improves to 4-17, 3-10 SWAL.
Darlington's Callie Norton scored a game-high 14 points. Teammate Mariah Wiegel scored 11 points, Taryn Rankin added nine points and Taylor Cox chipped in eight points.
The Redbirds won despite making just 11 of 29 free throws.
