Blue Devils slide by Cardinals

BRODHEAD - When Brodhead-Juda senior Ned Slocum had a 17-yard TD run in the fourth quarter Friday night, many players and coaches on the Evansville-Albany football team may have been thinking it was deja vu.

Last year, the Cardinals stunned the Blue Devils on a Hail Mary pass for a game-winning touchdown. There were no heroics Friday night. Evansville-Albany (2-0) forced an incomplete pass on a two-point conversion attempt to seal the 14-12 win.

"Any time you play Brodhead-Juda and you win by two points we are happy," Evansville-Albany coach Ron Grovesteen said. "It was just a great game right down to the end."

The Blue Devils had a strong one-two punch in the backfield.

Evansville-Albany junior Brennan Banks rushed for 135 yards on 14 carries and scored one touchdown, and senior Ryker Brown rushed for 122 yards on 19 carries to lead the Blue Devils to the win. With the loss, Brodhead-Juda drops to 0-2.

Evansville-Albany quarterback Zach Mielke tossed a 30-yard TD pass to Banks in the second quarter. Mielke ran in the two-point conversion on the option to give the Blue Devils an 8-0 lead.

The Cardinals cut into the lead with Slocum's 1-yard TD run in the third quarter to slice the lead to 8-6.

Banks answered with a 25-yard TD run to give the Blue Devils a 14-6 lead.

DARLINGTON 30,

NEW GLARUS-MONTICELLO 13

DARLINGTON - Darlington's Conrad Blosch and Hunter Johnson rushed for more than 150 yards apiece and the Redbirds ran away with an easy win over New Glarus-Monticello in sloppy conditions.

Johnson ran for 179 yards and scored three touchdowns. Blosch ran for 166 yards and one touchdown.

Darlington, which didn't attempt a pass, finished with 392 rushing yards.

NG-M senior running back Trey Taylor carried the ball 20 times for 260 yards.

One instance of the wet and slippery conditions affecting the action on the field came when the Redbirds forced a fumble Knights but were unable to take advantage of the turnover as they fumbled the football twice on the snap in the following series.

BLACK HAWK 24, SHULLSBURG 0

SOUTH WAYNE - Senior Jacob Quinn carried the ball 63 yards for a touchdown with just less than 2 minutes left in the first quarter to spark Black Hawk en route to a 24-0 victory over Shullsburg.

Quinn also could not be stopped with four minutes left in the third quarter. He pushed through defenders at the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown, adding another six points for Black Hawk after an uneventful second quarter. Quinn then ran in a 2-point conversion to push the Warriors ahead of the Miners 16-0.

Quinn ran 17 times for 77 of the 206 rushing yards posted by the Warriors.

Though the Miners' defense managed to force two fumbles from Black Hawk, their offense was unable to capitalize.

Black Hawk sophomore quarterback Brody Milz, who racked up 30 passing yards, rushed 14 yards for a touchdown with 3:49 left in the game.

Milz completed three out of seven attempted passes, with two accounting for the top receivers of the game; one each went to sophomore teammates Jason Treuhardt and Jett Rufenacht for 15 yards apiece.

Black Hawk finished with 249 total yards and improved its record to 2-0.

PEC-ARGYLE 34,

IOWA-GRANT 18

BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica-Argyle senior Riley Ostby sprinted 80 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter for one of three rushing touchdowns against Iowa-Grant to secure a victory for the Vikings.

With Ostby on the ground, coach Larry Green's team sprinted past the visiting Panthers. A big run by Ostby put the Vikings ahead of the Panthers and the senior running back added another to knock off the Iowa-Grant team by pushing through the defense for his own 2-point conversion against the Panthers' defense.

The Vikings kicked off their scoring against Iowa-Grant with an 8-yard TD run by junior A.J. Hendrickson which resulted in a six-point advantage. With a missed opportunity to add the conversion, the Vikings led 6-0 before Ostby darted through defenders for a 23 yard-TD run. Quarterback Logan Green smashed over the goal line for a successful conversion.

At the half, a tight 14-12 lead put the Vikings at a small advantage.

Though the rain was a

welcome sign for many, the players had trouble navigating the weather as it continued to pour throughout the game. Green said the conditions made the game frustrating, though he was happy

to see the team maintain

composure as the ball turned slippery.

"I think (the game) went well, the offensive line played pretty well," Green said. "Obviously it was wet and the offensive line made a few fumbles, but we were able to recover. Our defense stiffened up and allowed very few yards through to the end."

Losing their traction, the visiting Panthers were unable to post a single point in the following quarter, a devestation for the squad after first watching senior Brooks Chandler sprint for a 51-yard TD as a precursor to the exploding run by Ostby. The senior running back added insurance for the Vikings with an 8-yard run in the fourth quarter.
