The Monroe Blaze traveled to Waunakee on Saturday and trounced the host team 34-0 on a rain-soaked field. Monroe's Carter Sawdey and Alex Tordoff each had two touchdowns.
Cole Murray and Jake Kind dominated the defensive stats, and Kind also scored a touchdown for the Blaze. Monroe's final tally was a defensive touchdown by Kyle Walters on a fumble recovery in the opponent's end zone.
FIFTH GRADE
The Monroe Blaze fifth-graders traveled to Sun Prairie on Saturday afternoon and were held scoreless in a 12-0 loss to Sacred Heart. In a game dominated by defense, 11 Blaze players were able to touch the ball on offense, including first-year player Tryston Schultz, who made his first catch.
On defense, 23 of 30 Blaze players were able to make a tackle, with Jacob Quinn leading the way with eight. Garrett Gogin, Josh Richter and Ben Latimer recorded six tackles apiece, while Sky McGregor and Tanner Thompson each were involved in four tackles. The Blaze fifth-graders (0-2) host the Madison Spartan White Team at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the YMCA.
SIXTH GRADE
The sixth-grade Blaze defeated the Southside Raiders 30-0 in a game played at Penn Park in Madison.
The Blaze opened its scoring on a 5-yard run by Matt Siegel, but the extra point attempt failed, making the score 6-0. The Blaze then scored on a safety, as Joe Dahmen tackled a Raider ball carrier in the end zone to push the score to 8-0. Bryan Wang made a diving catch on a 10-yard pass from Heath Butler and Joe Dahmen kicked the extra point to push the score to 16-0 at halftime.
Early in the second half, Cody Wolf scored on a 10-yard run and Joe Dahmen kicked the extra point to push the score to 24-0. Although forced by rule to run inside the tackles, Matt Siegel scored the final Blaze touchdown on a 25-yard run in the fourth quarter, with the extra point failing.
The Blaze dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage due to the fine line play of Alex Borowitz, Sean Saxby, Riley Buol, Joe Dahmen, Matt Monahan, Mitch Swanson, Danton Studer, Justin Batz, Jarod Barenklau and Matt Coplien.
SEVENTH GRADE
The Monroe Blaze seventhgraders traveled to Madison to take on the Spartans last Saturday. Steady rains didn't slow the Blaze, who racked up more than 400 yards of offense in the 49-0 win.
Blake Duffy, Kyle Olson, Seth Butler, Charlie Kind, Noah Tostrud and Jake Hirsbrunner all scored offensive touchdowns, while Kind and Butler also scored touchdowns off of interceptions.
The defense held the Spartans to only one first down.
EIGHTH GRADE WHITE
Monroe eighth grade White team played in Madison against the Madison Spartans. In a hard-fought game in the rain and mud, the Blaze dropped a 16-8 battle.
The lone Blaze touchdown came on a 24-yard pas from Alex Barenklau to Bryan Schroeder. Steven Christiansen added the two-point conversion. Defensively, the Blaze caused three fumbles and two sacks.
EIGHTH GRADE RED
The Monroe eighth grade Red played Monday night at Wisconsin Heights. The Blaze had a tough night of it, losing 28-0.
Heights jumped on the Monroe team early, mounting a 22-0 first quarter lead. These scores came on the opening kickoff return and two long passes. In the second half the Monroe defense stiffened, allowing only two field goals for Heights.
For Monroe, Ben Murray passed for 60 yards, and Connor Wahl and Aaron Hesgard rushed for 39 yards. Ed Hille had 27 return yards. Defensive leaders were Trent Wyssbrod with 12 tackles, Trevor Gorr with 10 and Dusty Burkhalter with seven.
