Here is the Green County YMCA Blaze youth football program roundup for this past weekend:
The fourth grade Monroe Blaze earned a win on Saturday, Sept. 17 against Pec-Argyle by a score of 38-0.
Monroe received the opening kickoff and took the ball down the field, with Nick Bansley capping the drive off with a 45-yard touchdown run. Derrick Ritschard scored the two-point conversion to put Monroe up 8-0.
After Monroe stopped Pec-Argyle on fourth-and-1 with a tackle by Shaun Sweeney, Monroe's offense stepped back onto the field and increased the lead to 16-0 on a Bansley 31-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion behind the blocking of Lee Gertsch, Hunter Snider, Brandon Blum, Aaron Ziolkowski and Conner Andrews. After another good defensive stop, it was Travis Edmund's who punched in another touchdown on a 52-yard scamper.
Capping off the scoring was Judson Rikkers, who scored from 51-yards out and scored the two-point conversion. While Monroe's rushing attack accounted for 345 yards, led by Bansley's 140 yards and three scores, it was the physical defense that was key to the game, led by Ziolkowski, Payton Sawdey and Jacob Ferguson. Monroe (1-1) next travels to Wisconsin Heights Saturday, Sept. 24 at 10:30 a.m.
Fifth Grade White
The fifth grade White team defeated the Regents Gold team by a score of 19-2 behind a strong defensive effort.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Blaze opened the scoring on a 35- yard run by Jordan Montgomery to make the score 6-0. After recovering a Regent fumble, the Blaze again scored on a counter play by Montgomery from 55-yards out. The extra point run was good by Nick Schumacher to give the Blaze a 13-0 halftime lead.
On the first series of the third quarter, Hunter Huschitt recovered a Regent fumble and the blaze struck quickly, again on a Montgomery 26-yard run to push the score to 19-0. The Blaze stopped the Regents on a fourth quarter goal line stand, but then suffered some sloppy play deep in their own territory before giving up a safety.
For the game the Blaze rushed for 166 yards on 18 carries with no pass attempts while the Regents ran for 122 yards on 31 carries and lost two fumbles. The fifth grade white team next plays away against McFarland White on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Fifth Grade Red
The Blaze fifth grade Red team bounced back from a tough loss last week and defeated Mount Horeb White 18-8. The Blaze Red team was lead by Colby Argall who scored three touchdowns on runs of 65-yards, 38-yards, and 50-yards. All the offensive linemen did a great job blocking as Argall ran for over 200 yards for the second week in a row.
The Blaze Red defense did a much better job of getting to the football and tackling this week. Mount Horeb was limited to just under 100-yards of total offense. The Blaze Red team did not give up a touchdown until midway through the fourth quarter.
Just about all of the defensive players recorded at least one tackle. Jared Baumgartner had two sacks, and Argall was in on nine tackles. On Saturday, the fifth grade Red team will travel to New Glarus to take on New Glarus-Monticello Blue at noon.
Sixth Grade
In their second game of the season, the sixth grade Blaze earned a shutout over Wisconsin Heights 38-0.
The first quarter proved scoreless as both teams' defenses held strong. One minute into the second quarter, Dylan Scace ran the quarterback sneak in for a touchdown. Later, Sam Kind had a fumble recovery on our 27-yard line and in the next play Brayden Zettle ran the ball in for a touchdown, leaving the score 12-0 going into the half.
The offense came out even stronger in the second half. Zettle had a 55- yard run in for a touchdown. And then with two minutes to go in the third quarter, Scace handed off to Zettle for an 18-yard run for a touchdown. At the start of the fourth quarter, Jonah Tostrud intercepted a pass and ran it in 45-yards for a touchdown leaving the score 30-0. Throughout the game Dempzy Foley had a few two-point kick attempts that came up short, but Foley held strong and came back with an 8-yard touchdown and then successfully kicked for the extra two points, leaving the Blaze with the victory. Key fumble recoveries throughout the game were made by Robert Leden, Kind, D. Foley and Zettle.
Seventh Grade
The Blaze seventh graders hosted New Glarus and came away with a victory winning 38-0. The defense set the tone again this week and held New Glarus to 96 total yards.
This week the offense had more of the same heavy ground game from the previous week and racked up 266 yards of offense with Carter Sawdey having 54 yards and two touchdowns and Ryne Miller adding 73 yards and two touchdowns. Alex Tordoff finished with 60 yards and one touchdown. PAT kicks were added by Hayden Arneson, Hogan Edwards and Carter Sawdey.
Eighth Grade
The Monroe Blaze eighth grade traveled to Belleville this past Saturday and was able to come away with a 19-15 win over a much larger Belleville-Albany team.
After receiving the opening kickoff, Belleville completed a 55-yard pass before Monroe's defense stiffened and held Belleville to a 22-yard field goal. Monroe responded with a three play 66-yard drive capped off with a 28-yard Brent Edmunds touchdown run. McKenzy Foley kicked the point after touchdown for an 8-3 lead. On Belleville's next possession, Jaron Kuester caused a fumble that eventually lead to a successful Foley 23-yard field goal and an 11-3 Blaze lead. Belleville converted back-to-back Blaze fumbles into two touchdowns before the end of the first half. With both Belleville missing both PAT's, Monroe went into halftime only down 15-11.
The second half was a physical defensive battle with multiple turnovers and hard hits. Late in the third quarter, Cam Shaw was able to return a punt 32-yards to put Monroe into favorable field position. Tanner Thompson scored the final touchdown on a 1-yard run with Foley kicking the PAT for the final 19-15 score. Jarod Amacher who also intercepted a Belleville pass late in the game.
With the win, the eighth grade Blaze record now stands at 2-1 (2-0 in league play). The eighth graders host Pec-Argyle at the YMCA at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday for week 3 of league play.
