Green County YMCA Blaze fifth grade (2-4) notched their second win of the season by defeating Mt. Horeb-Barneveld 30-16.
Jacob Quinn scored on a 36-yard pass reception and run from Jaron Kuester. McKenzy Foley added a two-point kick for an 8-0 lead. The Blaze scored again on a Garrett to Cam Shaw 17-yard pass.
Coach Brian Keith cited a breakaway block by Tryston Schultz to break Shaw into the end zone. Foley added his second kick for a two-point conversion. Mitch Keith scored the Blaze's third TD with a short run. Jaron Kuester finished off the scoring with a 22-yard quarterback scamper led by a key block from Sky McGregor.
For the game Kuester rushed for 72 yards. On defense 21 of 29 players were involved in tackles, led by Josh Richter and Ben Latimer who each had seven solo tackles.
The Blaze fifth grade will end their season Thursday night under the lights at Monroe High School against Madison West Regents. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.
Sixth grade
Monroe Blaze sixth grade (4-1-1) trailed 6-0 at half time Saturday at the YMCA to Madison East Side. The YMCA Blaze finally scored late in the third quarter on a 41-yard Matt Siegel run. A failed extra point left the score at 6-6.
On the Blaze's first possession of the fourth quarter they drove the length of the field with strong running by Heath Butler who capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. Sean Saxby added the two-point conversion for the Blaze.
The Blaze's final score came late in the fourth quarter when they controlled the line of scrimmage and manage a late touchdown again by Siegel. Coach Tom Dahmen praised Desmond Ford, Joe Dahmen, Riley Buol, Rhett Katzenberger, Matt Coplien and Jacob Flannery for multiple tackles, many for losses, and an interception.
The sixth grade Blaze finish their season at Mt. Horeb Saturday.
Seventh grade
The Blaze seventh-graders improved their record to 6-1 with a 32-6 victory at Barneveld over the co-op team of Mt. Horeb-Barneveld.
Seth Butler rushed for two touchdowns, Kyle Olson added another and a two-point conversion. Jake Hirsbrunner and Charlie Kind each scored for the Blaze. Blake Duffy added an extra point.
Coach Shane Olson praised his defense, led by Ryan Hughes, Ethan Moehn, Bret Zimmerman, Mike Graham, Billy Breault, Blake Bast and Blake Foesch. The seventh-graders will play their final season game Saturday at Sun Prairie with a 8:30 a.m. kickoff.
Eighth grade white
Blaze eighth grade white beat the Madison Sharks 36-16 this past Saturday at the YMCA on the Dr. Scholl Athletic Field.
The Blaze strong ground attach was the difference, with the Blaze runners galloping to 335 yards. Alex Barenklau lead the way with three long touchdown runs. Corey Flannery scored twice and Mitch Haug added the final score. Defensely, the Blaze forced two turnovers including a poss interception by Josh Reise.
The Blaze will finish their Dane County League schedule when they travel to DeForest to face a 5-1 team.

The Blaze eighth grade red traveled to Middleton for Monday Night Football on the Turf at Breitenbach Stadium. Middleton downed the Blaze 24-16.
Although the Blaze Red were defeated, Coach Rod Hesgard stated, "This was the best game our group has ever played, can't say enough about how proud I was to be on the same field with the boys."
Monroe's scores came from Aaron Hesgard and Ben Murray. Defensively, the Blaze eighth-graders were lead by Trevor Gorr, Trent Wyssbrod and Ed Hille. Hesgard also praised the punting of Dusty Burkhalter, who pinned the opponents inside the 20 four times.
The Blaze eighth-graders will play their final DCAYFL game at the Green County Family YMCA at 9 a.m. Saturday.
