BARNEVELD - Last year, the Black Hawk Warriors held their opponents to just 36 points per game in reaching the Division 4 state semifinals. This year's edition of the Warriors is on pace to top that defensive achievement.

Black Hawk, ranked No. 6 in the latest Division 4 Wis-Sports.net Coaches Poll, completely shut down Barneveld, the 14th-ranked Division 4 team, in a matchup of the top two teams in the Six Rivers East Thursday, 41-19.

Black Hawk held the Eagles to just eight field goals on the night and no Barneveld player scored in double figures.

Both teams had over 20 turnovers each in the game.

Barneveld was 2-for-6 from the free throw line and Black Hawk shot 10-for-16.

The 19 points by Barneveld was its lowest point total since a 42-28 loss to Monticello Jan. 20, 2004.

On offense, senior Katie Place topped the Warriors with 12 points while senior teammate Kim Wellnitz added 10 points and junior Melissa Wellnitz scored nine.

Black Hawk (12-1, 7-0 Six Rivers East) now holds a two-game lead over Barneveld and will host to Arygle Tuesday.

Pecatonica 69, Argyle 39

ARGYLE - Pecatonica senior Kimee Chandler was a matchup problem for the Orioles Thursday night.

Chandler scored a game-high 22 points and was one of four players in double-figures as the Vikings trampled Argyle.

Pecatonica (6-8, 3-4 Six Rivers East) raced out to a 16-4 first-quarter lead. The Vikings' lead ballooned to 19 points at halftime.

"Everything she threw up went in," Argyle coach Johnny Hinjosa said of Chandler, a UW-Milwaukee recruit.

Pecatonica junior Ellie Gifford scored 11 points and senior Megan Rindy and junior Alisha Esselstein each scored 10.

Argyle (2-11, 0-7) was led by sophomores Danielle Treuthardt, who scored a team-high 13 points, and Katie Dammen, who had 11.

Juda 50,

Monticello 37

JUDA - Senior Heather Boeke and sophomore Ellen Kiser combined to score 41 of the Panthers' 50 points to lead Juda to a win over the Monticello Ponies Thursday.

Kiser scored 24 points and Boeke poured in 17 as the Panthers improved to 2-5 in the Six Rivers East, 7-7 overall.

Soph-omore Becky Nelson led the Ponies with 10 points, sophomore Desiree Marty and senior Kelsey Bernet each scored eight points for Monticello (2-4 Six Rivers East, 3-7 overall).

Monticello will host Barneveld Tuesday while Juda's next game is Friday Feb. 5 in the Six Rivers Challenge.

Mineral Point 49, Darlington 46

DARLINGTON - For the second time in two weeks, the Mineral Point Pointers edged the Darlington Redbirds in SWAL Conference girls basketball.

On Thursday, a slow start set the Redbirds behind 17-10 after the first quarter and offset a second-half comeback that fell short for Darlington (5-9, 3-6 SWAL).

"We got behind early and we just couldn't get things going until the third quarter," said Darlington head coach Adam Rotar.

The Redbirds found better success on offense and defense in the second half.

"We changed our defense which helped our offense be able to move and we put up some points off that," Rotar said.

Darlington's next game is Monday night at defending Divsion 4 state runner-up Potosi in non-conference action.
