ALBANY - The Black Hawk boys basketball team made big scoring runs and rode a big third quarter to a 55-31 win over Albany.
After a 10-0 first quarter run gave them an 11-8 lead, the Warriors outscored the Comets in the second quarter to enter the locker room at halftime up 22-15.
They emerged from the locker room and outscored the Comets 19-2 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
"First quarter, we got off to a great start," Albany coach Derik Doescher said. "Once a few things didn't go our way, it started to snowball."
Merik Meythaler and Seth Butler led the way for the Warriors, scoring 12 points apiece. Doescher said Black Hawk's balanced offensive approach is a key to their success.
"Black Hawk is deep and they play so well as a team," he said. "It's not one go-to guy out there. Defensively, they just hound you, and offensively they share the ball."
Junior Isaiah Shell led the way for the Comets with eight points. Doescher said his team's leading scorer was the focal point for the Warrior defense.
"They were physical with him and had somebody on him most times," Doescher said. "We just didn't have a whole lot of options tonight."
Regardless of the lopsided third quarter, Doescher was glad to see his team match the Warriors offensively, 14-14, in the fourth quarter.
"We had some young kids play hard," Doescher said. "They didn't find themselves scoreboard watching."
Argyle 46, Pecatonica 38
ARGYLE - Pecatonica and Argyle renewed their boys basketball rivalry Friday. The Orioles knocked off Pecatonica, 46-38.
Argyle's JV coach Chuck Bredeson said it was a hard-fought, defensive game.
"We played hard. It was a low-scoring game," Bredeson said. "We got some points in the end off of free throws, otherwise it was close all the way. They know each other from football, they were grinding it out."
Jon Hendrickson led Pecatonica with 13 points. Dillon Conwell also chipped in nine for the Vikings. Freshman Riley Ostby led Argyle with 17, while junior Christopher Severson added 14 for the Orioles. Bredeson said both Ostby and Severson had a lot of success attacking the basket.
"Ostby was big going to the rim," Bredeson said. "He had 13 in the first half driving to the glass. Severson was good for us in the second half, going to the glass."
Argyle improved to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the Six Rivers East. Pecatonica dropped to 2-4, 0-3.
Barneveld 51, Monticello 47
BARNEVELD - The Monticello boys basketball team nearly knocked off defending Six Rivers East champion Barneveld Friday night, but the Ponies came up just short, falling to the Eagles, 51-47.
Barneveld jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter, but Monticello came back to take a 26-25 lead into halftime. Monticello outscored the Eagles by six in the third, and seemed to be on the verge of picking up the win, as they held a 44-33 lead with 6:26 remaining in the game. Barneveld came storming back, though, closing the game with an 18-3 run to seal the victory.
Bryce Klitzke and Ben May each scored 14 points to lead Monticello. Devon Schult was instrumental in the Barneveld comeback, recording 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter.
The loss was Monticello's first of the season. The Ponies now sit at 7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference. Monticello now trails Barneveld by half a game in the Six Rivers East race.
