Black Hawk scores big win

SOUTH WAYNE - Senior Michael Flanagan had two interceptions in the fourth quarter for the Black Hawk football team on Friday to seal a 30-12 victory against Potosi-Cassville.

The first half ended in a hard won six points for the Warriors (2-0). Senior Brody Milz took advantage of fumble by the Chieftains and ran the ball into the end zone, giving Black Hawk the lead.

Penalties were a problem for the team, coach Cory Milz said, as well as three lost fumbles, but the Warriors fought hard against a large team.

"Potosi-Cassville is a new co-op and they've got a lot of big kids," Milz said. "I thought our offensive line did a good job against them. Potosi-Cassville didn't hold back."

Despite a disheartening blocked punt in the third quarter, which ended in the Chieftains scoring six points against Black Hawk, the Warriors kept pushing back.

Brody Milz had two touchdown runs, leading the team with 210 yards on 30 carries. Junior Colby Argall had 132 yards on 21 carries. The Warriors as a team rolled up 359 rushing yards.

Prairie du Chien 19, Darlington 18

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN - For the second straight week, Darlington lost a game in the final seconds. This time, it was Prairie du Chien scoring on a TD run with 40 seconds to go to beat the Redbirds.

"This week I thought we came to play," Darlington coach Scott Zywicki said. "If we would have played like this last week we would have won. We just had a couple of plays that if we have someone make them we probably would have won this game.

Darlington (0-2) had two turnovers including a fumble it lost at the 1-yard line of Prairie du Chien.

"We coughed the ball up too much and we had a dropped touchdown pass," Zywicki said. "We had numerous opportunities to go in front by more than six points. We just didn't get the job done."

Darlington will host Cuba City next week in its first Southwest Wisconsin Activities league opener.

"We have to keep working to get better," Zywicki said. "We had better execution, but it wasn't enough."

Lake Mills 42, New Glarus-Monticello 21

LAKE MILLS - The Glarner Knights started out positive against the L-Cats when junior Zach Feller returned the opening kick-off to put New Glarus-Monticello ahead by six, but they lost the fight in the fourth quarter.

"They outlasted us," coach Jeff Eichelkraut said. "But it was a good game against a good team. We were physical with them."

Clinton 48, Brodhead-Juda 7

CLINTON - For the second straight year, the Brodhead-Juda football team will have to dig its way out of an 0-2 start if it is going to make the playoffs.

"We are really a young team this year," Brodhead-Juda coach Jim Matthys said. "We are trying to get better every week. That is what it's all about."

Brodhead-Juda senior Brekan Day had a 4-yard TD run in the third quarter for the Cardinals.

Brodhead-Juda will host Jefferson Sept. 1.

"They are also one of the top teams in the conference," Matthys said of Jefferson. "We beat them last year. I know they will be hungry for us."

In other games, Jefferson beat Evansville-Albany 20-13, dropping E-A to 0-2, and Pecatonica-Argyle defeated Assumption 20-0 to improve to 2-0.
