MINERAL POINT - The Black Hawk girls basketball team lived off of second-chance scoring opportunities and cruised to a 58-34 win over Mineral Point Monday night.
Black Hawk seniors Kim Wellnitz and Katie Place each had seven offensive rebounds. The pair also each registered double-doubles; Kim Wellnitz scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds and Place scored 13 and had 16 rebounds.
"We got a lot of second-chance scoring opportunities off of offensive rebounds," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said.
Black Hawk (20-1, 11-0 Six Rivers East) led just 15-14 after the first quarter and by five points at halftime. The Warriors, ranked third in the Associated Press Division 4 state poll, outscored the Pointers 14-9 in the third quarter and took a 39-29 lead into the fourth quarter. The Warriors sealed the win by outscoring the Pointers 19-5 in the fourth quarter.
Black Hawk junior Melissa Wellnitz scored 14 points and junior Rachel Rygh had 11 points, which included three 3-pointers.
"We had a lot of kids contribute," Flanagan said.
New Glarus 49, Evansville 31
NEW GLARUS - Senior Tanya Gruter scored a game-high 17 points to lift the Glarner Knights to a non-conference win.
New Glarus (8-13) jumped out to a 10-3 first-quarter lead. The Knights blew the game open by outscoring the Blue Devils 14-6 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 15 points entering the fourth quarter.
The Knights made 13 of 27 free throws. New Glarus seniors Alissa Siegenthaler and Rachel Miller each scored eight points.
