SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk boys baskektball team overcame a slow start and then held on to post a 47-45 non-conference victory against Orangeville (Ill.) on Tuesday.
Orangeville took a 10-4 first-quarter lead, but the Warriors used a 16-7 advantage in the second quarter to take a 20-17 halftime lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Broncos got 3-point baskets from Brady Pickett and Tanner Kleckler to pull to within 43-42, then tied it at 43-43 with a free throw.
Kyle Walter's layup made it 45-43 and, after a Warriors' stop, Merik Meythaler made two free throws with 35 seconds left to give Black Hawk a 47-43 lead.
Orangeville scored again with 13 seconds left to make it 47-45, then fouled Black Hawk's Seth Butler to stop the clock. Butler missed the front end of the bonus and the Broncos got the rebound, but missed on a 3-point attempt and the Warriors grabbed the rebound as time expired.
Junior Cory Rupnow led Black Hawk (8-8) with 10 points. Nick Jensen led Orangeville (8-15) with 12 points.
Black Hawk will host Barneveld Tuesday.
