Black Hawk-Darlington grapples to second

SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk-Darlington's Kolbe Ubersox and Brody Milz wrestled to titles, and the WarBirds had nine wrestlers medal en route to taking second at the Black Hawk Invitational Saturday.

Lancaster clipped Black Hawk-Darlington for the team title 223-197. Pecatonica-Argyle tied Richland Center for fourth (126) in the 14-team invitational. Brodhead-Juda finished ninth (89.5), followed by Sugar River in 10th (84).

Ubersox at 138 pounds, who was a state qualifier last year, was dominant posting two pins and a technical fall. He opened the invitational by pinning Pecatonica-Argyle's Jaden Fish in 24 seconds. Ubersox then pinned Dodgeville's Jack Dougherty in 1:08 in the quarterfinals. In a semifinal match, he defeated Lancaster's Logan Schneider in a technical fall, 15-0 in 4:56. Ubersox defeated Richland Center's Warrick Wolf in a major decision, 14-3 in the title match.

Milz also went 4-0 to roll to the title. After a bye, he pinned Durand's Nick Upmann in 41 seconds in a quarterfinal match. Milz then pinned Cuba City-Southwestern's Jake Neis in 1:165 in a semifinal match. Milz captured the title when his teammate Connor McGown couldn't wrestle in the championship match due to an injury.

Both Brodhead-Juda and Sugar River had five wrestlers place in the top five. Brodhead-Juda junior Jackson Hauri at 145 pounds, who was a state qualifier last year, went 3-0 to bring home the title. After a bye, Hauri pinned Dodgeville's Eli Reeson in 2:43 seconds. He then rolled to an 11-2 win over Parkview's Conner Nolan in a semifinal match. In the title match, Hauri defeated Black Hawk-Darlington senior Grady Rielly 10-6.

Max Gerner won the championship at 132 pounds. After two byes, Gerner pinned Cuba City-Southwestern's Wylie Niles in 3 minutes, 15 seconds in a semifinal match. In the title match, Gerner pinned Lancaster's Dylan Tydrich in 3:58.

Pecatonica-Argyle senior Prestan Rosenstiel (195) went 4-0 to capture the title. After a first-round bye, Rosenstiel pinned Black Hawk-Darlington's Karl Seffrood in 3:36. He then pinned Parkview's Gavon Brown in 4:57 in a semifinal. In the championship match, Rosenstiel pinned Mount Horeb's Travis Leuzinger in 3:33.

The other medal winners for Black Hawk-Darlington include senior Paul King (126), second; Rielly (145), second; sophomore Cayden Milz (152), second; McGowan (220), second; senior Lance Ubersox (170), third; Cody Blosch (132), fourth, and Eric Hocking (120), fifth.

After a first-round bye, King pinned Dodgeville's Gus Donovan in 5:11. He then defeated Sugar River's Robert Chenoweth 17-5 in the semifinals. In the championship match, Belmont-Platteville's Isaac Wiegel defeated King 10-3. Rielly won his first two matches pinning Belmont-Platteville's Trevor Heim in 1:28 and then edging Richland Center's Tylor Miller 7-4 in a semifinal match before losing to Hauri in the title match.

Cayden Milz went 3-1 on the day and pinned Lancaster's Morgan Seippel in 2:56. He then pinned Sugar River senior Jack Diederich in 2:36 in the semifinals. In the championship match, Madison Memorial's Kaden Reetz pinned Milz in 1:07. McGowan had two pins en route to taking second at 220. He pinned Dodgeville's Louden Fuerstenberg in 1:42 and edged Brodhead-Juda senior Trent Davis 3-1 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, McGowan pinned Pecatonica-Argyle's Lucas Gilbertson in 4:56. However, an injury robbed him of a chance to matchup against Brody Milz.

The other top five finishers for Brodhead-Juda are Kaleb Erb (160), who finished second; Russell Waeffler (120), who took fourth; Jayson Starr (126) and Davis (220), who each took fifth. Erb went 3-1 to take second. Dodgeville's John Phelan handed Erb his only loss in the championship match 16-9. He opened the invite by pinning Parkview's Lieven Dumke in 44 seconds. He then defeated Black Hawk-Darlington's Hunter Bredeson 10-3 in a semifinal match.

The other medal winners for the Raiders included Robert Chenoweth (126), who finished third; Jack Diederich (152), who took fourth; Joe Quaglia (106) and Trevor Enloe (138), who each finished fifth. After a bye, Chenoweth pinned Dodgeville's Skylar Symons in 1:46. King then knocked him off in a major decision, 17-5. Chenoweth bounced back and edged Lancaster's Andrew McCarville 8-6 in a third-place match.

The other top finishers for Pecatonica-Argyle include Dakota Doescher (106), second; Noah Krahenbuhl (113), third, and Gilbertson (220), third. Doescher was dominant for the Vikings. After a first-round bye, he pinned teammate Dawson Gross in 1:38. Doescher then pinned Mount Horeb's Trey Frame in 1:26. Lancaster's Remington Bontreger then rolled to a technical fall win over Doescher in the title match.
