CASSVILLE - Black Hawk sophomore C.J. Leuzinger scored a team-high 16 points and knocked down two 3-pointers to lead the Black Hawk boys basketball team to a season-opening 66-56 win over Cassville Thursday night.

Leuzinger made 10 of 10 free throws to help the Warriors come back from a 31-29 deficit at the half. The Warriors outscored the Comets 37-25 in the second half.

"We have a young group of kids," Black Hawk coach Charlie Anderson said. "In the first half, we came out really nervous and tried to get used to the varsity competition."

The game against Cassville marked the Warriors' opener since their first game against Darlington was rescheduled due to the Redbirds reaching the Division 6 state championship game in football.

The Warriors took control of the game in the second half. Black Hawk junior Josh Meier in his first varsity game scored 13 points, and freshman Conner Meyer added 11 points.

The Warriors made five 3-pointers and shot 19 of 30 from the free-throw line.

Albany 78, Benton 62

BENTON - Albany senior Tyler Dahl set the pace at both ends of the floor scoring a game-high 28 points to help the Comets roll over Benton.

Albany (2-1) closed the first half on an 8-2 run to take an eight-point lead at the half.

Albany junior Brock Gilkes scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers in the second half. Albany senior Cole Trapp added 16 points.

"We came out and shot the ball pretty well early," Albany coach Derik Doescher said. "He (Dahl) was all over the place defensively and offensively. When Brock, Cole and Connor Trow are making 3s it allows Tyler to find a seam and get to the rim."

Albany made 11 of 14 free throws.

"We did a good job of taking care of the ball," Doescher said. "We never let them back in the game."

In other action, Cuba City defeated Darlington 55-48 and Belmont defeated Juda 67-42. Clinton handed Brodhead its first loss 82-64. No other information was available at press time.
