Black Hawk, Albany pick up conference wins

JUDA - Seniors Melissa Wellnitz and Rachel Rygh combined for 13 kills and senior Alyssa Piefer added five aces and 15 assists to power the Warriors past the Panthers, 25-11, 25-13, 22-25, 25-11 in a Six Rivers East match up Thursday.

Freshman Jen Wellnitz chipped in with five kills, three blocks, and two aces for Black Hawk.

The Panthers needed a lift in game three to stay alive and got it from sophomore Brittany Moe, who delivered 10 service points.

"She didn't miss a serve all night," said Juda head coach Pam Green.

Game four, however, was a different story as Black Hawk's Piefer served nine straight points at the outset.

"We weren't able to come back from that deficit," Green said.

Juda junior Ellen Kiser had 10 kills and nine blocks to lead Juda. The Panthers also got 11 assists from senior Aly Pierce and eight digs each from junior Katlyn DeVoe and senior Megan Trotter.

Juda (0-4) will play in the Brodhead Invitational while Black Hawk (3-1) participates in the Lancaster Invitational on Saturday.

Albany 3, Monticello 0

ALBANY- The Comets stayed unbeaten in the Six Rivers East after sweeping the Monticello Ponies Thursday, 25-23, 25-17, 25-21.

Reigning conference player of the year Sydney Bump put down 16 kills along with 16 digs and four blocks to lead Albany. Senior Courtney Pfeuti dished out 22 assists and sophomore Kirstie Kauk scored 14 service points to go with 15 digs for the Comets. Senior Kaitlyn Schulz added six kills and two aces for Albany.

"Everybody played well," said Albany head coach Connie Wunschel. "We covered their blocks. I told our team not to take Monticello lightly. Both sides were really scrapping. We just served a little stronger than they did."

Monticello was led by senior Taylor Pfeuti with seven kills and junior C.J. Dilly with 16 assists.

Albany (3-0) and Monticello (1-2) will take part in the Brodhead Invitational Saturday.

New Glarus 3, Marshall 2

NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights pulled out a five set match to improve to 1-2 in the Capitol South.

"It was huge for our confidence," New Glarus coach Lacy Bloedorn said. "It was very intense."

New Glarus senior Alexa Secord had eight kills. Senior Mara Gartzke and junior Jenna Romich each collected four blocks. New Glarus senior Lauren Narveson had a team-high 12 assists.

The Knights will play at the Brodhead Invitational Saturday.

Barneveld 3, Pecatonica 1

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Vikings split their first two games with the Eagles, but Barneveld came away with wins in games three and four to capture a 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24 win Thursday in Six Rivers East conference action.

Senior Ellie Gifford registered 10 kills and senior Nicole Dearth had two blocks for Pecatonica. Also contributing for the Vikings were senior Jennah Schliem with 14 assists, junior Allison Swenson with eight digs, and senior Alexis Hill with three aces.

Pecatonica (0-3 Six Rivers East, 1-6 overall) will be in the Weston Tournament Saturday before traveling to Albany Tuesday.

Fennimore 3, Darlington 0

DARLINGTON - The Redbirds dropped their fourth straight SWAL Conference match as they fell to the Fennimore Golden Eagles, 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 Thursday.

Junior Elizabeth Mathias had six blocks and junior Miranda Wiegel had four kills to lead Darlington. Junior Vanessa Riley added six assists and an ace while junior Chayse Hermanson came up with 12 digs for the Redbirds.

Darlington (0-4) will host Riverdale on Tuesday.
