'Birds lose close one; Cardinals roll

MINERAL POINT - Darlington stayed with Mineral Point all game, despite losing, 46-40, Tuesday.

The Redbirds couldn't control how well the Pointers shot free throws down the stretch.

"It was close all the way through," assistant coach Matt Stietz said. "We had several leads in the game, but they pulled away late. We had it tied in the fourth, but Mineral Point made its free throws to close it out."

Mineral Point led 7-6 after the first quarter and 18-16 at halftime. Going into the fourth, the difference remained two points, 28-26, in favor of the Pointers.

Carley McDonald led Darlington with 12 points. Amy Jorgenson scored 10 and Ashley Martin had eight. As a team, the Redbirds shot 18-for-25 from the free throw line.

Rilee Schmitz led Mineral Point with 14 points.

Darlington hosts Cuba City Thursday.

Brodhead 44, Evansville 28

EVANSVILLE - The Brodhead girls basketball team rolled to a win over Evansville in a Rock Valley Conference game Tuesday night.

Brodhead outscored Evansville 14-5 in the second quarter en route to a 11-point halftime lead.

Brodhead senior Dana Lewis scored a game-high 12 points to lead the Cardinals, while fellow senior Riley Olson scored eight points.

The Cardinals made 19 of 32 free throws in the game.

Watertown Luther Prep 62, New Glarus 40

WATERTOWN - A slow start to the third quarter doomed the Knights Tuesday.

Waterntown Luther Prep, which led New Glarus 30-22 at halftime, outscored the Knights 22-7 in the third quarter.

Senior Michelle Preston led New Glarus with 12 points, coming on four 3-pointers. Sophomore Alycia Atwell scored nine points, freshman Anya Sween had eight, and senior Tanya Gruter added seven for the Knights.
