MONROE - The Monroe Cheesemakers enjoyed an inning teams only dream about. Trailing 5-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, they scored 13 runs without an out to beat the Monona Grove Silver Eagles, 15-5, ending the game via 10-run mercy rule.

Each team tallied a run in the first inning before the Silver Eagles put up two runs in the third off Monroe's Becca Armstrong to take a 3-1 lead. Monroe scored in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2, but the Silver Eagles scored two more in the fourth to go up 5-2.

"It wasn't looking good going into the fifth," Monroe head coach Dale Buvid said. "But, once we got it going, we kept it going."

The fifth inning landslide by the Cheesemakers featured two-run singles by seniors Kaylee Craigo and Rebecca Flannery. The big blow came from the bat of senior Kelsey Erickson, who hit a three-run homer that skimmed off the top of the fence. Monroe sent 14 batters to the plate without making an out and only one batter reached on a walk.

The Cheesemakers ended up with 17 hits for the game. Armstrong got the win, going five innings and giving up three runs on four hits. She walked five and struck out eight.

Monroe (5-2, 3-1 Badger South) will host the Monroe Invitational Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. Six teams will compete including Freeport, Juda, Mount Horeb, Orangeville and Waterford.
