Better late than never for some

MONROE - It's better late than never.

That could be Pecatonica-Argyle senior Jeremy Meudt's slogan after he and his twin brother Jason decided to go out for track. Just three weeks into his track career Jeremy Meudt received big news when he found out he was a special qualifier in the high jump and would be making the trip to the WIAA Division 3 state track meet Friday and Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Jeremy Meudt, who has cleared 6-feet, 2-inches this year, is the fifth seed in the high jump and is gearing up for the big stage.

"He and his twin brother talked about coming out for track at the end of the year," Pecatonica-Argyle coach Cathy Francois said. "I couldn't put them in anything until they showed me what they could do. He has a vertical jump. This is just a great opportunity for him."

The Darlington boys track team is in contention for medals in the 1,600-meter and 400-meter relays. The Redbirds 1,600 relay team of Tucker Wiegel, Cedric Flesher, Mitchell Langkamp and Alex Erickson is the No. 4 seed. The Redbirds' 400 relay team of Wiegel, Langkamp, Trynton Schwartz and Erickson enters the state meet as the No. 6 seed.

"We think they have a good chance of medaling," Darlington coach Todd Bastian said. "Like any state meet you have to perform. Someone will run better than they are supposed to," Bastian said. "Someone will run worse than they are supposed to. Hopefully, we can make it to the finals."

Pecatonica-Argyle junior Lucas Stoehr is the fifth seed in the 400 (:50.86) and Erickson is the sixth seed.

"We hope he can get a medal," Bastian said of Erickson. "We think in the open 400 he can go faster."

Francois is excited by Stoehr's opportunity to run at state.

"I think he has had an amazing season so far," she said. "He just turned his whole high school track career around. He has met every goal he has set."

Albany senior Tyler Conley is the 10th seed in the 800 (2:02.04) and Pecatonica-Argyle's Wyatt Massey is the 16th seed. Albany junior Drew Mather is the 10th seed in the 3,200 (10:09.10). The Comets' 3,200 relay team may have the best chance of medaling. The 3,200 relay team of Jose Ramirez, Reece Whitehead, Mather and Conley is seeded seventh (8:19.37).

The Darlington girls track team will run all four relays at state - the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200. The Redbirds' 1,600 relay team of Hannah Huffman, Kayla Lange, Olivia Wedig and Chayse Hermanson enters the state meet as the fourth seed after running a 4:12.10.

"There times have been coming down," Bastian said. "They will have to run faster. You get up there and the adrenaline gets pumping."

Bastian isn't ruling out contending for a medal in other relays.

"We will do everything we can to squeeze all the seconds out of the other relays that we can," he said. "Someone is going to do better at the state meet than they are supposed to. Our theory is why not us."

Black Hawk junior Rachel Rygh will run the 100 dash, 200 dash and 1,600 relay at state. Rygh has run the ninth fastest time in the state in Division 3 this year in the 100 (:12.94).

"She has an outside shot," Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said of Rygh medaling in the 100. "It's hard to compare those seed times because every venue is different. Every race is unique."

Milz said the key for Rygh is getting off to a fast start out of the blocks.

"She's capable of running a 12.8," he said.

Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore Kendra Sigg, who was a special qualifier in the 1,600, could have a chance at a medal after qualifying for the second consecutive year. Sigg enters the state meet with the eighth fastest time in the 1,600 (5:23.79).

"She knows what it takes to run at state," Francois said. "I think if she is focused she can medal for us."

Black Hawk senior Katie Place has the 10th best distance in the triple jump, but she had a jump more than 34-0 at the Darlington regional.

"She's capable of going in the 34-foot range," Milz said of Place. "A goal for her is to make it to the finals and see what happens."

The Warriors' 1,600 relay team of Kate Quinn, Place, Melissa Wellnitz, and Rygh hasn't always trained for this event all season, but they have run some top times including 4:14.20 at the sectional and are a ninth seed at state. The Albany girls track team's 3,200 relay team is seeded 12th (10:15.94).

"Our goal is to make it to the finals and get down to the 4:10 range," Milz said which is the school record in the 1,600 relay.
