ALBANY - Junior Libby Beck scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Albany girls basketball team to a 50-38 season-opening win over Parkview Tuesday.
The Comets trailed by two points at the half, but outscored the Vikings 30-16 in the second half. Albany senior Brook Kahler added 13 points. Albany closed the final 8 minutes with a 20-8 run. Kahler made 4 of 4 free throws to close out the victory for the Comets.
Beck scored 12 of her 21 points in the second half to spark the Comets. For an Albany team that won just four games last year, coach Derik Doescher was excited to start with a win after talking over the program after a long stint as the boys basketball coach.
"The first half was sloppy. I didn't know what to expect going into the second half," Doescher said. "It's a good feeling to come away with the opener. They should be proud of the win."

BLANCHARDVILLE -With five freshman on the varsity roster, Pecatonica's third-year coach Bobby Rose understands there will be growing pains and a big learning curve this season.

"We looked scared in that first half," Rose said. "We have a lot of younger players and if you are not ready to play on the varsity where the game is faster and against a fast team like that they will just take the ball from you. I think the game slowed down for us in the second half."
One such player was Pecatonica freshman Lily Busser who scored a team-high seven points. Pecatonica junior Abby Loomis and junior Krin Broshous each chipped in five points.
