MONROE - Athletic teams from Monroe High School will spend more time on the bus with longer trips in the future after the WIAA's Board of Control approved a high school realignment plan that will see the Badger Conference add Beaver Dam and Watertown in fall 2017.

The Board of Control approved the 45-school southwestern Wisconsin realignment plan on Tuesday.

Monroe is 63 miles away from Watertown and 73 miles away from Beaver Dam.

With the Little Ten Conference dissolving, the Badger Conference will expand to include Watertown and Beaver Dam. High school principals from the Badger Conference met recently and decided to provisionally assign Beaver Dam to the Badger North Conference and Watertown to the Badger South if the realignment plan was approved. Watertown has an enrollment of 1,303 students, which is double that of Monroe.

Some Monroe school district officials were proponents of realigning the Badger Conference schools based on enrollment or dividing the conference into large and small to make it more equitable.

Starting in fall 2017, the Badger North and South Conferences will be balanced with each having eight schools. The Badger South will feature Monroe, Fort Atkinson, Madison Edgewood, Milton, Monona Grove, Stoughton, Oregon and Beaver Dam. The Badger North will be made up of Waunakee, DeForest, Sauk Prairie, Reedsburg, Portage, Mount Horeb, Baraboo and Beaver Dam.
