BEAVER DAM - The Monroe Avalanche hockey team dropped a tough game to Beaver Dam Tuesday night, losing 6-5 in overtime.
Beaver Dam took a 2-0 lead in the first period. The Avalanche responded with goals by Johnny Kallgren, Jarrett Warden, and Gus Werhane in the second period to cut their deficit to 4-3 entering the final period. Werhane added another goal for the Avalanche in the third, as did Nick Gross, to send the game into overtime. Beaver Dam scored first in the extra period to get the win.
"We completely controlled the game. Unfortunately, sometimes the better team doesn't come out on top," said Monroe coach Nate Brown. "They put every bit into the game, and I'm exceptionally proud of that."
Brown said he was proud of his players for keeping calm despite the antics of Beaver Dam.
"I'm proud of our guys for keeeping their heads," he said. "They (Beaver Dam) were playing dirty. You can never blame that on the kids. The coaches couldn't control themsevles. It's just a pretty poor example, so of course the players will play like that. It's too bad that a game that would've just been between two good teams turned into something else."
Brown said he wasn't surprised to see the two-goal performance from Werhane.
"Gus always plays with every bit of his heart," he said. "The two goals aren't surprising. It was a team effort, though. He got those goals because of excellent passing."
Monroe (1-11) hosts Madison LaFollette, a team they beat earlier this season, on Thursday.
