JANESVILLE - The Darlington boys cross country team finished 11th place at the 40-team Midwest Invitational Saturday at the Blackhawk Golf Course.
Monroe junior Nick Baumann finished 25th out of 280 runners with a time of 16 minutes, 40 seconds. The Cheesemakers finished 23rd as a team (615 points) and Albany was 27th (690). Madison La Follette ran away with the team title 70-102 over Kimberly.
The top runner for Darlington was senior Jaden Komprood who took 39th (16:53). Darlington was the top Division 3 team and each team that finished higher is a Division 1 school. Each of the Redbirds' five runners finished about as fast as their No. 3 runner from last year's race.
"As a team we ran better this year than we did last year, but we finished 11th," Darlington coach Arnie Miehe said. "This meet was a little bit tougher. You get to run in a big meet atmosphere and see where you stack up."
Darlington's Tanner Evenstad finished 62nd (17:19) and ran about one minute faster than he did last year. Freshman teammate Payton Heinberg took 70th (17:24) and senior Blake Cwynar was 78th (17:27). Senior Sean Barbee rounded out the top five for the Redbirds taking 80th (17:28).
Albany senior Tyler Dahl led the Comets, finishing 94th (17:46), and his freshman brother Josh Dahl took 99th (17:50).
Monroe junior Parker Ingold took 138th (18:18) and senior Jack Schluesche was 145th (18:29). Junior teammate Ryan Peterson finished 149th (18:33) and senior Derek Christiansen was 158th (18:38).
Albany junior Isaac Halverson ran to 146th place (18:29) and Connor Trow took 166th (18:41). Junior Travis Oliver finished 185th (18:59).
In the girls' race, Albany finished 15th (405) out of 30 teams followed by Monroe in 24th (584) and Darlington 28th (673). Arrowhead edged Kimberly for the team title 85-89.
Albany junior Ciara Kaderly finished 20th (19:59) and Monroe sophomore Rachel Meier took 30th (20:25) out of 217 total runners. Albany freshman Kirsten Oliver took 55th (21:09) and freshman Megan Anderson was 75th (21:33).
Albany sophomore Emma Guenther took 126th (22:35) and Emily Hauri was 129th (22:41).
Monroe junior Emma Peterson finished 112th (22:20) and junior Jordan Hirsbrunner took 124th (22:31). Allyce Fahrney ran to a 154th place finish (23:18) and Kayla Einbeck rounded out the top five for the Cheesemakers finishing 164th (23:42).
Darlington ran without its top runners. Darlington sophomore Meghan Douglas returned after having her foot injured when a cow stepped on her, but ran the junior varsity race. Sophomore Erin Wolf started the varsity race, but pulled out due to a back injury.
Darlington sophomore Reghan Komprood was the top finisher for the Redbirds taking 78th (21:39). Sophomore teammate Emma Crist took 131st (22:42) and junior Paige Schilling finished 136th (22:52). Freshman Ilse Mendez took 159th (23:28) and Jaci Moseley took 169th (24:04).
"We would have liked to do better as a team, but we were without two of our top girls," Miehe said.
Miehe said Mendez ran a "super" race for a freshman.
