Bats lead Comets, Orioles to victories

ALBANY - The Albany Comets survived a shaky first inning and came from behind to defeat the South Beloit Sobos in non-conference baseball action Thursday.

A first-inning error led to three runs off Albany starting pitcher Cody Schulz, but the Comets struck for four runs in the second inning to take the lead. Albany added another run in the third and took control with a four-run fourth inning highlighted by Mitchell Kauk's three-run homer.

Boomer Detra pitched the final five innings and struck out 10 to earn the win in relief. Detra went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and Schulz collected three hits to lead the Comets.

"We're hitting the ball very well," said Albany head coach Brian Dahl. "Everyone made contact."

Albany (1-1) will host New Glarus in another non-conference game Monday.

Argyle 13,

Belmont 3

BELMONT - After having their first two games of the season postponed, the Argyle Orioles made the wait for their season opener worthwhile with a 13-3 win in five innings over the Belmont Braves Thursday. Senior Ryan Geissbuhler went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI's while senior Cole Jordan drove in a pair of runs by going 3 for 3 with two doubles and three runs scored.

Freshman Alec Treuthardt made a successful debut with three hits and three runs scored plus a double, a stolen base, and an RBI.

Senior Nate Thomas pitched all five innings, giving up just three hits and two earned runs with eight strikeouts. Thomas also went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs for Argyle.

"It's nice to get out and play," said Argyle head coach Travis Erickson. "We hit really well for the first game of the season."
