ALBANY - Aside from personally putting 17 Blue Devils on base Monday evening, the Comets played a whale of a non-conference game in a 7-6 loss to Division 2 Evansville.
Albany's pitchers issued 15 walks and hit two batters but their club still took a 5-5 tie into the seventh inning before more free passes led to Albany's demise.
Both teams dipped deep into their rotation to get innings to their lesser-used pitchers. Brock Peters worked the first five for Albany before handing off to sophomore Bryce Hulbert.
Drew Peach socked a homer and had three hits for Albany and Jordan Dean pitched in with three hits as well.
SIX RIVERS EAST
BARNEVELD 16-5,
ARGYLE 1-1>
After an inauspicious start to Monday evening's doubleheader, Argyle's starter Nick Martin gave his club a chance to win the night-cap.
But, facing stalwart Barneveld, Martin's offense came up with just one hit in the second game.
Martin went the distance in the second game, striking out six over six and scattering six hits.
Barneveld pitching was masterful throughout as Michael Schlimgen won the second tilt and Kyel Thompson and Patrick Clerkin combined on a two-hitter in the first game. The opener was close, just 3-1 through five innings, before the Eagles scored seven times in the sixth and six times in the seventh.
SWAL
MINERAL POINT 12,
DARLINGTON 4>
Being home for the first time in weeks, perhaps the Redbirds felt disoriented as the Pointers struck for six runs in the first inning and remained undefeated with the SWAL victory Monday evening.
Darlington outhit Point 8-7 but committed seven costly errors. Three Redbirds had multiple hits, including starter Ethan Pickett, who slugged a solo shot in the second inning.
NON-CONFERENCE
NEW GLARUS 4,
COLUMBUS 3>
Enjoying a night off from
pitching duties, Zach Ketelboeter played hero at the plate Monday evening.
The New Glarus senior stayed back and drove a line drive back where it came from to plate Matt Felt for the walk-off victory.
Columbus struck for three runs in the sixth, chasing sophomore starter Ryan Bright.
"He pitched very well, but just ran out of gas in the sixth," New Glarus coach Warren Howard said.
