BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica opened its 2009 baseball season Thursday with an 8-2 win over Shullsburg-Benton.

Milton Kurschner looked like an opening-day ace, pitching all seven innings, allowing just two hits, striking out nine and walking just three. Both runs were unearned.

"Milton did a great job," Vikings head coach Jim Strommen said.

Kurschner also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Lee Vlasak finished 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Devin Jeglum roped a double and had three RBI.

"It was a good first game. We made some plays, but errors led to runs," Strommen said.

Pecatonica opened the season as the WBCA's preseason top-ranked team in Division 4. The Vikings play Monday at Riverdale.

ARGYLE - The Orioles nearly knocked off the Pointers despite error trouble.

Mineral Point scored 15 runs on nine hits but had no errors in the field. Argyle scored 13 runs on just three hits, but added six errors.

The Orioles next play at Black Hawk on April 7.
