MONROE - Matt Barrett won the third annual 5K Celtic Run on Saturday.

Barrett, 26, of Monroe, finished the Green County YMCA-sponsored event with a time of 15 minutes, 27 seconds. Barrett was one of 12 runners to break 20 minutes in the 5K. The Celtic Run attracted 489 runners including 424 in the 5K and 65 in the kids' run.

"It's always nice seeing the kids start out with these early," said Chad Shelton, program director at the Green County YMCA.

Shelton said about $10,000 was raised that will be used to support youth programs at the YMCA.

The event also saw an increase of about 39 runners this year despite the freezing rain.

"We had 450 runners last year," Shelton said. "I was anticipating an increase. My goal was 500, and we were about there."

The top women's finisher was Holly Nearman (17:56). Kevin Wellnitz, 27, of Monroe, finished second overall (16:46) followed by Verona's Justin Darrow, 26, in third (16:55).

Dustin Leutenegger, 31, of Monroe, took fifth (18:13) and Lena's Tom Leverton, 28, was sixth (18:32). Jessica Langford, 41, of Rockford, finished seventh (18:35) and Rock City's Eric Simmer, 25, took eighth (19:33). Nick Baumann, 14, of Monroe, finished ninth (19:36) and Madison's Sean Strache, 37, rounded out the top 10 (19:38).

"If you look at the 5K, there were a lot of people who broke 20 minutes, which is good for a 5K."
