BARNEVELD - The Monticello Ponies were limited to just nine points in the first half as the Barneveld Eagles rolled to a 56-37 win Friday in a Six Rivers East conference game.

"In the first half we played solid defense and in the second half, Monticello played well and hit six 3-pointers," said Barneveld head coach Bill Sullivan. The Eagles used a 1-3-1 zone defense to shut down the Ponies in the first half and take a 29-9 halftime lead.

Senior Austin Steffen led the Ponies with 14 points. Sophomore Lucas Marty added 10 points and senior Lukas Kolasch had seven points for Monticello.

Monticello (0-3 overall, 0-1 Six Rivers East) will host Highland in a non-conference game Monday before getting back into conference play Thursday at home against Argyle.

Albany 54, Black Hawk 38

ALBANY - After falling behind 17-9 in the first quarter to Black Hawk, Albany Comets head coach Derik Doescher decided that a change would do his team some good. That change was a defensive adjustment and it paid off in 54-38 win for the Comets over the Warriors in a Six Rivers East Conference game Friday.

"We made the adjustment in the second quarter," said Doescher. "We were in a man-to-man then we switched to a full-court press and half-court zone defense."

The switch allowed the Comets to pull to within 24-21 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Comets' full-court press shut down the Warriors, allowing no field goals and just two free throws while Albany took the lead for good at 35-26. The Comets widened their lead in the fourth quarter by connecting on 12 of 16 free throws.

Sophomore Isaiah Shell topped all scorers with 17 points, including 7 of 8 at the foul line for Albany. Senior Gavin Ruef scored 12 points and junior Tyler VanDusen chipped in with 11 points for the Comets. Junior Cory Rupnow led Black Hawk with 14 points.

Albany (2-2 overall, 1-0 Six Rivers East) will travel to Pecatonica Thursday. Black Hawk (2-2, 0-1) will travel to Potosi for a non-conference game Tuesday.

Pecatonica 49, Argyle 30

ARGYLE - Senior Karson Feller scored 17 points and the Vikings' defense held Argyle to three points in the fourth quarter in Pecatonica's 49-30 win over the Orioles.

Senior J.J. Hogan added nine points for Pecatonica. Sophomore Alec Treuthardt scored 10 points to lead Argyle.

Pecatonica (1-3, 1-0) will host Belmont in a non-conference game Tuesday. Argyle (1-3, 0-1) hosts Shullsburg in a non-conference game Monday.

Darlington 72, Fennimore 47

DARLINGTON - The Redbirds jumped out to a 20-11 first quarter lead and never looked back in a 72-47 rout of the Fennimore Golden Eagles Friday in a SWAL Conference game. The 72 points were a season high for the Redbirds.

Senior Brandon Hardyman scored a career-high 25 points while seniors Kent Miehe and Zach McArthur each scored 10 points for Darlington.

"We got a lot of good looks in the open court and we rebounded well," said Darlington head coach Mike Hopkins.

Darlington (4-1, 1-1) will host Barneveld in a non-conference game Monday before their next SWAL Conference game Thursday at rival Mineral Point.

Lake Mills 63, New Glarus 60

NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights rallied from a 30-13 halftime deficit by scoring 47 second-half points but it wasn't enough as New Glarus fell to the Lake Mills 63-60 in a Capitol Conference crossover.

The Glarner Knights climbed back into it by making 10 3-pointers in the second half and trailed 61-60 with under 30 seconds remaining and possession of the ball, but missed a shot with 3.9 seconds to play. After a Lake Mills free throw made it 63-60, an attempt to tie it with a shot from halfcourt missed.

Senior Riley Miller scored 16 points, senior Tyler Kreklow added 15 points, and sophomore Trae VandeBerg had 13 points for the Glarner Knights.

New Glarus (3-1 overall) will travel to Lakeside Lutheran Thursday.
