JUDA - The Juda volleyball team dug a big hole in the first two sets that they couldn't overcome in a three set loss to Barneveld 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 Thursday night.
"We have a hard time starting the game off with a lot of intensity," said Juda senior C.J. Dunwiddie, who had a team-high six kills and added seven digs. "We wait until it's do or die because we don't want to lose. We have to come out with more intensity."
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first game before Juda coach Tara Lund took a timeout. The Panthers (3-5 Six Rivers East) rallied and came within 19-15 after aces by Brittany Moe and Morgan Kamholz, and a kill from senior Courtney Moisan. The Eagles closed out the first game with five straight points, including two aces.
The second game was much the same story as the first. Barneveld sophomore Samantha Evans rattled off nine straight service points to give the Eagles a 9-0 lead. The Panthers struggled to force a sideout. Barneveld senior Mindy Kelly also had a run of seven consecutive service points to help the Eagles build an insurmountable 17-2 lead. Barneveld freshman Rachel Slaney had two of her team-high 11 kills during that run.
"We covered our blockers and their hitters," Lund said. "We did a good job of covering. It's just the third hit wasn't falling in for us. I took three timeouts to say the same thing. I think when we get down it's hard to come back from a deficit like that."
Juda made a late rally on the heels of some strong serving by Dunwiddie and Moe to cut the Eagles' lead to 23-16. The Panthers carried the momentum from the end of the second game into the final one.
Juda jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the final game sparked by Kamholz's serving. Kamholz finished with 14 assists and six digs.
Evans scored six straight service points to help the Eagles battle back to take an 11-6 lead. Slaney had a big kill late in the game to give the Eagles a 21-20 lead.
"We did a better job of executing because we knew it was do or die," Dunwiddie said. "Barneveld is our No. 1 rival in all sports. I think we wanted it. We just had stupid mistakes."
Juda junior Miranda Trotter had 10 digs and four kills and Moisan had six kills.
"I think it was better execution," Lund said of the final game. "They found it in that third game. We can't wait until halfway through the second game and the third game to get going."
