BARABOO - The Monroe baseball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Baraboo Friday, 6-1, 12-7.
Monroe senior Mitch Marty pitched the first game and in six innings gave up six runs on eight hits. He struck out one and walked two. The Thunderbirds scored three runs in the sixth on four hits.
Monroe senior Dylan Schwitz went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Cheesemakers.
The Cheesemakers (10-10, 6-5 Badger South) used four pitchers in the second game. Senior Drew Nafzger pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up four earned runs on five hits. He struck out one and walked one. The Cheesemakers also used senior Dylan Cleaveland (2/3 of an inning), Jared Weber (2/3 of an inning) and Josh Farrey (2 innings).
"We want to make sure we can have Nafzger ready if we need him in relief on Monday against Madison Edgewood," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "We also wanted to let the younger guys get some innings to see what they can do and who can help us in the regional."
Monroe's Mitch Riese went 3 for 5 in the second game with three RBIs. Senior Kramer Henning went 2 for 3 and Kevin Klopfenstein was 2 for 4.
The Thunderbirds scored six runs in the seventh to seal it.
"We had a couple of mistakes that cost us big in that inning," Huffman said. "We talked to the kids after the game and told them this is one of those doubleheaders where we had a lot go right and a lot go wrong."
