MONROE - Alex Landen believes the Monroe boys hockey co-op got caught playing a dump-and-chase style of hockey in their 12-2 loss to Baraboo-Portage Friday night.
Baraboo-Portage had two players post hat tricks, including sophomore Adam Stanton who scored four goals and senior Brett McCutchin.
"We started to dump and chase," Landen said. "We didn't get any bounces. It seems like every time we dumped it down they recovered, and they are a good passing team. They passed it up and set it up with a purpose."
The Avalanche (2-12) trailed 6-2 to start the third period before Baraboo-Portage broke the game open with six more goals. The Thunderbirds out-shot the Avalanche 34-15.
"We didn't communicate as well as we needed to," Avalanche coach Nate Brown said. "That third period was on me. I didn't have them as focused as I needed to. We knew they were a good team that could move the puck. They are a good team. It should not have ended the way it did."
Early on, it was the Avalanche that appeared primed to win their second straight game. Landen scored the first goal at 4 minutes, 31 seconds to give the Avalanche a 1-0 lead.
"I was ecstatic," Landen said. "I thought everything would fall into place after that. I wanted to keep the momentum going."
The momentum swung to the Thunderbirds. Stanton scored a game-tying goal at 7:26 to tie the game at 1. McCutchin scored a go-ahead goal on an assist from Joe Beale at 15:40 to give the Thunderbirds a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.
Stanton scored two goals in the first 6 minutes of the second period. Stanton scored his second goal of the second period on the power play and it staked the Thunderbirds to a 4-1 lead. McCutchin scored a goal on an assist from Kurtis D'Asto to give the Thunderbirds a 5-1 lead. Avalanche junior Gus Werhane, of Lena-Winslow scored a power play goal to cut the Thunderbirds' lead to 5-2. Just when it looked like the Avalanche may make a run, Baraboo-Portage's Griffin Nicksic scored a goal on an assist by Stanton to give the Thunderbirds a 6-2 lead.
Avalanche goalie Anthony Theisen had 18 saves. Brown is still looking for the Avalanche to generate more offense.
"We didn't take enough shots on goal," Brown said. "Their team played well on defense. Their forwards did a nice job of back checking. We just didn't pull the trigger as often as we needed to."
Monroe will host McFarland on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. at SLICE.
"We can learn from our mistakes and come back stronger," Landen said.
